💡 Early Parenting Tip: shift your perspective!
Play with an infant or toddler often looks “different” from our adult conceptions or expectations.
Our tiny humans take the objects in their environment and explore... but books are not JUST for reading, rattles are not JUST for shaking, and blocks are not JUST for stacking!
They’re also for mouthing and banging and moving through the air. They’re for exploring properties like texture and weight and shape. They’re for playing peekaboo and hiding under the sofa cushion and placing on the head and experiencing gravity.
When we can acknowledge and accept that play doesn’t need to “look” a certain way, and that our infants and toddlers are learning about concepts and movement and communication JUST by virtue of watching us, exploring objects in their environment, interacting with us and with the tools we use... when we can follow their lead and TRUST that by being present with them (for a few moments at a time!), we are teaching them what social interaction IS... We are doing the job of being parents. We are doing the big job of raising tiny humans. We are doing the job of supporting them to be all they can become, and we don’t need to spend money - or even spend our whole day giving them our undivided attention! - we are doing the job ALREADY.
