Ara199 48" x 48" x 2" Paper
Ara 199 dissects and then reconstructs clusters of repeating geometric shapes. The result is neither an aperiodic nor an asymmetrical pattern, nor is it chaotic as an underlying structure remains intact. This piece is an experiment in creating patterns that do not repeat in the expected way.
A researcher, Pablo Damasceno, and I discuss three dimensional tile forms. Though we speak very different languages, he in computational and theoretical techniques and myself in paper, we communicate through visual aids. He once mentioned that no matter the polygon shape they use in experiments, they always tile in an array in 4, 5 or 6-sided shapes. However, on Earth all building blocks stem from 4 or 6-sided forms. They have never seen anything grow in 5-sided arrays. Why isn’t it done, I asked, if it could be done? He reasoned that aperiodic is not structurally repeating. Years later he sent me a 5-sided tiled image of a meteorite taken with a scanning electron microscope.
