Hailed as the CREATOR of Afrobeat born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kut but known as Fela Kuti.
He was a Nigerian who was fiercely proud of the sound of west african music and blended the styles of American Funk and Jazz with chanted vocals and percussion to form Afrobeat. He was outspoken on matters of civil rights and used his music as a weapon to speak to power. He was an avid pan-africanist and his songs frequently reflected this. He was often critical of western philosophies and did not see why the terms 'Third World,' 'undeveloped,' or even worse, 'Non-aligned countries,' should be used, as they all implied inferiority.
He said: “Music is supposed to have an effect. If you're playing music and people don't feel something, you're not doing it. That's what African music is about. When you hear something, you must move. I want to move people to dance, but also to think. Music wants to dictate a better life, against a bad life. When you're listening to something that depicts having a better life, and you're not having a better life, it must have an effect on you." #sharethisknowledge #blackmusic #blackmusichistory #melanin #panafricanism #panafrican #afrobeat #jazz #music #africa #nigeria #woke #conscious #blackculture #soul #music #blues #blacklivesmatter #melaninpoppin
