You first taste the creaminess of the coconut milk base before the medley of flavors from the turmeric, curry powders, cilantro and shallots sink in..Swallow with a sigh of pleasure and you feel the sweetness from the (brown?) sugar. And approximately 10 seconds later, you experience the heat from the red and green chillies radiating from the base of your stomach, spreading to your extremities, making the Toronto winter feel ashamed of itself as you peel off your jacket, and roll up your sleeves for your next, much larger mouthful.. I've rambled on for close to 100 words but I still dont feel I've done justice to the #khaosoi at @paitoronto.
If you are adventurous (and arrogant) enough to ask for some extra chilli oil on the side, mix some into the broth and enjoy how the vengeful heat from the chillies is assuaged by the soothing creaminess from the coconut making you feel both thankful you had the patience to wait in line for 45 minutes for a table and annoyed that you didnt order the chicken version of the dish for yourself but instead picked the vegan counterpart which now has to be shared across the table.
