FOR SALE: ‘Italianate Scene’ (18” x 14”). Gouache and oils with finely crushed seashells on canvas. £620. (Free postage and packing within the UK. I also ship internationally). As I move ahead with my looser painting style I’m discovering that I apply the pigments as often with my fingers as with my brushes, with the result that I achieve very emotional results. I’m doing this both because I’m enjoying working in a freer style, but also because I’m combatting the early symptoms of mascular degeneration. After painting to almost exclusively to commission with a miniaturist technique for nearly 30 years, I can no longer see details as clearly as I once could, so rather than straining my eyes and spending days suffering from migraines, I’m going with the flow. A number of well-known artists also had vision problems and persevered with their art. Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, in particular, wrote extensively about the effects of vision loss on their lives and on their art. —-
The surface of this painting is deliciously textured. It contains striations of a kaleidoscope of hues, which means that the canvas is fascinating when viewed close-up as well as when seen from a distance.
