Help me out! I'm trying to pick 3 books from this stack to bring to read on the flights to and from South Africa and I'm having a really, really hard time choosing! Have you read any of these titles? Which three would you choose/recommend? #books #PaineFamilyAdventure

"It must be SO cool to be able to travel internationally with kids!" They say. Well, let's just say that in the middle of the amazing moments, there were plenty of moments like this one (@scheerbrian took this photo on my phone behind our backs -- literally!). Here we were post-customs in South Africa, trying to sort out all of our carry-on luggage before picking up our pile of checked luggage. We were tired and smelly after almost 20 hours of traveling and my greasy hair was in desperate need of being washed. {Want to read more about our flights, the lessons we learned the hard way, and the 10 things you should never be without when you travel with kids? The 4 books that made the cut to go in my backpack for the 15+ hour flights to South Africa & back. Thanks SO much for your input and votes to help me decide. I know I said I was only going to bring 3 but, um, I just couldn't help myself. 😊 And yes, I know some of you are going to be sorely disappointed that Unbroken is not in this stack. I promise I'm going to read it soon, but I decided that reading this story while being in a plane over the ocean for hours -- especially when I'm already not a real fan of flying -- was just not the best choice. πŸ˜‰ #books #goodreads #PaineFamilyAdventure

We got our very own South African scarves, courtesy of @lisajobaker's parents -- who are so graciously hosting us right now. Isn't my scarf absolutely the perfect color?? I love it!! Also, I'm grateful to be sharing this South Africa trip with these two guys, both who gave up a whole week of their lives and flew halfway around the world because they believe so passionately in what God has called us to be a part of here in South Africa! @jessepaine Thank you for believing in me, loving me, serving me, faithfully leading our family, and being my best friend and confidante. @scheerbrian thanks for being the best manager (well, except for @joyjoyg2!) a wise counselor, and a great friend. #PaineFamilyAdventure

Tired, but oh so thrilled to be here in South Africa!! Our kids were especially excited to have their very first stamp in their brand-new passports! (Oh and it was amazing how they could barely seem to keep their eyes open and had all sorts of bad attitude going on the last hour of the flight, but as soon as we got off the plane, they were fired up and ready to go again!! They just finally all crashed and fell asleep 30 minutes ago and we're hoping they stay asleep for a good, long time!) #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure

Someone snapped this photo yesterday and it aptly depicts how I was feeling when I got up. It had been a hard morning... I lost my really important bag with my medicine, supplements, glasses, and contacts at the airport. I had been up for a few hours in the middle of the night with very cranky, jet-lagged kids. I had tried to blow dry my hair and burned up the motor my blow dryer + flipped the breaker to a bunch of outlets. I was tired, couldn't see (because of not having contacts), and my head was throbbing because I didn't have my allergy meds. And then Silas threw up. Honestly, I was trying so hard to choose joy, but wondering if maybe we'd made a big mistake in coming to South Africa. @lisajobaker's parents (whom we're staying with) were so, so amazing to not only help me track down contacts from an eye doctor here, but also the meds I needed. And then some of the most amazing and memorable things happened yesterday afternoon truly making it one of the best days of my life. As I've said before, sometimes you have to experience the awkward in order to experience the awesome. That was truly yesterday... More pics to come! #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure

Our forever friends in South Africa. We love these people more than words can express and we miss them so much already. (These are the beautiful people who make up the Take Action Ministry team -- two local South African families and the Fey's who moved to South Africa from the U.S.) It's a shame that none of us have any personality. As you can imagine, when we're together, it's just all stoic and quiet and boring. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure #lekker

And we're off to South Africa!! 5 things you should know about this picture: 1) I usually am fairly minimalist when packing. I mean, I'm the girl who can pack for 8 days in a carry-on. 2) But taking my family halfway around the world and being gone for 8 days made me set aside my minimalistic packing skills and go more for the Have Options & Prepare Well mode. 3) Because there's nothing like (2) 15+-hour-long flights with 3 kids to make you want to make sure you have options! 😜 4) Everyone got a backpack for the flights + a suitcase that we checked. Mom got the last say in what they brought ("Yes, you must bring an extra change of clothes in your backpack. Trust me, a LOT of accidents can happen in 15 hours!") 5) The kids are super nervous, but also excited. You can watch my scope from a little while ago to see what I mean (I'm @moneysavingmom on Periscope.) #PaineFamilyAdventure #motherhood #TravelingWithKids

I adore this photo! We took others on this trip that were much more posed, but this one... THIS accurately captures the joy we've experienced here in South Africa as a family. My family now understands why I'm so smitten with this country and they have all fallen fast in love, too! Silas, the child I expected would struggle the most on this trip with all the newness, said last night: "Do we HAVE to leave next week?? It feels like we've only been here for a day!!" #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids

Why you should not pack Loom Bands in a suitcase -- even if the container they are in has a tight lid on it. We now have an explosion of Loom Bands all over our living room... But hey, at least our kids had fun making bracelets with other South African kids on our trip. So I guess that makes it worth it?!? πŸ˜‰ #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids

Thanks to jet lag, we've been up since 3:30 a.m. (Most of us went to bed WAY early yesterday, though -- our bodies are quite happy on South African time!) so we've been unpacking and doing laundry in the wee hours of the morning. It made me sort of sad to be stain-treating all the red South African soil stains on our clothes... It's such a beautiful reminder of such a memorable week! But while the soil might wash out of our clothes, our love for South Africa can't be scrubbed from our hearts. Ever. And now it's not just me who is smitten; our whole family has fallen fast in love! πŸ’•πŸ’• #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure #laundry

Back in the USA! The 15-hr flight home went much smoother than our flight there -- mostly because we went in with a better game plan this time around now that we knew more what to expect! Other than a very messy bloody nose from one child, it was highly uneventful and all of us got good sleep. Coming home, our bodies are tired, but our hearts are so full and happy (and our kids are begging us to plan a return trip ASAP!) It was good to be away. We learned so much, we experienced so much, and we are coming home with renewed passion for giving and refreshed perspective on what really matters. Because I wanted to soak up the moments and be 100% present while we were in South Africa, I was offline most of the trip. It was good, but there is so much I want to share about our time there! So expect many more pictures and posts in the upcoming days. For now, I'm headed to bed... (But I do plan to do my usual Periscope in the morning at the usual 7:30 am CT! See you then!) #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids

It's not every day that you have to stop your vehicle to wait for the rhinos to move off the road!! #PaineFamilyAdventure #ThisIsSouthAfrica

Getting ready to board the 15-hour flight back to the U.S. and we're taking a bit of SA back with us in the form of rugby shirts. (While in SA, we got to experience a typical South African Braai to watch the Springboks play in the World Cup. @jessepaine got into the game with the best of them and was soon cheering just as loudly as the locals!) #worldcup #rugby #PaineFamilyAdventure

I love this man so much. I love that he has believed in me and encouraged me to follow the passions God has put in my heart to make a difference in the world. He has supported me, prayed for me, championed me, sacrificed for me, been a wise counselor to me, and been such a listening ear for me -- even when I've struggled, failed, and had crazy ideas. This past week, he gave me one of the best birthday gifts I could ever wish for: Taking our whole family to South Africa for a week! We had the most memorable and beautiful week and it was a birthday I will cherish for the rest of my life. I love doing life with you, @jessepaine! Thank you for loving me -- quirkiness and all! Thank you for challenging me to be the best version of myself that I can be. And thank you for believing Ephesians 3:20 with me! I love you! #PaineFamilyAdventure #marriage

(Edited to add, sorry that I used the wrong filter on this picture and it made the plate look disgusting... I didn't realize that until AFTER I'd posted it!) At breakfast this morning: "Mom! They have lamb sausage!! I LOVE lamb!!" Words I never thought my 6-year-old would say! He'd never eaten lamb before this trip to South Africa, but he's now in love after having it multiple times this week. We'll definitely be adding lamb to our regular menu line-up now that we've discovered we all love it! #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure

I looked over yesterday and saw Kaitlynn sitting on the dusty soil in the Maubane community teaching two girls different poems with hand motions. And I knew that this was one of the big reasons we're supposed to be here. This trip was a big step outside our childrens' comfort zones. There were a lot of nerves for them going in. We talked to them about how this was not a mission trip, but a relationship trip. Because we have so much to learn from the South Africans. And they don't need quick fixes or Amercanized solutions, they need our friendship and love most of all. Yes, we want to give in very practical and tangible ways, but the most important thing we can give is ourselves -- to be WITH them, to listen to them, to let them know that they are not alone. There have been hard moments and awkward moments for each of our kids, but there have been many, many moments like this. When I see them -- all on their own -- pushing past language barriers and cultural differences and just reaching out their hands and hearts in love. It's beautiful beyond words. #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids

This is Peet. He is spear-heading the new wood-working shop I told you about in my last post. I wanted to stay and talk to him all day long! I was so inspired and challenged by his passion, compassion, and vision. This wood-working shop is located in a very poor area of South Africa (Hammanskraal) and the long-term goal is to train and equip young entrepreneurs and provide a desperately-needed source of income for this community. I wish you could have met Peet! He not only wants to teach South Africans craftsmanship, but he wants to help them develop a strong work ethic, a commitment to excellence, and an entrepreneurial spirit -- three things that are not commonly taught or exemplified to the young people in this area. As we left the shop, Peet handed me this beautiful tray that he had made especially for me. I was touched beyond words and cannot wait to display this new piece of South Africa in our home. It will serve as a constant reminder to me to pray for Peet and his family for God to richly bless their self-sacrificial efforts to make an impact in this community. Also, y'all: I'm just so madly in love with this country that my heart just might burst. The needs are so great, but there is so much hope and so many amazing opportunities for us to make a difference! I have so much more to share... Stay tuned! #PaineFamilyAdventure

This picture might not look like much to you, but I could barely hold back tears when I walked into this workshop yesterday morning. You see, when I was in South Africa in January, we had many discussions about the possibilities of helping the locals learn more marketable skills (most can't think of jobs outside of being domestic workers or security guards or gardeners). It was just a dream in January, now they have a real live work-working workshop, suppliers, trainees, and customers!! And they have big, big visions of how this small operation might someday be a big scale operation making a huge difference in the lives of this very needy community!! Here we are talking to Pete, the amazing carpenter from Cape Town who is spear-heading this project. (P.S. This photo was taken just moments after Silas threw up all over the floor of this new workshop. Poor little guy!! Gratefully, we had plenty of wipes on hand + the South African equivalent of Gatorade and it wasn't long before he was feeling as good as new! We think the time change and new foods just made his stomach out of sorts.) #TravelingWithKids #PaineFamilyAdventure

The best part of our flight to South Africa? They gave us Milano cookies (my very favorite)! The worst part? The kids only slept a few hours and they DIDN'T have wifi (despite the fact that they advertised that they did!) Oh well! I got to sleep (thanks, Dramamine!) and read a book and it was nice... Aside from some bad attitudes coming from the 10 and under crowd. I have decided that if you want a good test of your inner character, take 3 kids on a 15-hour flight. I had quite a few prayers going up for extra patience during that last hour when it felt like we were on the verge of imploding. We didn't, gratefully, and we are SO happy to be here!!! My family has already fallen in love -- and the kids' attitudes have dramatically improved. More pics to come... #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids

South Africa may not be ready for us, but we're coming for you... Here's to a calm, throw-up-free, turbulence-free, sleep-filled 15 hour and 40 minute flight to J'Burg. {Also, we just found out that OUR FLIGHT HAS WI-FI!!!!! @jessepaine @scheerbrian and I may have just done a total, full-on happy snoopy dance in the aisles of our plane. I kid you not.} #PaineFamilyAdventure #TravelingWithKids
