Recently, we had the opportunity to work with the one and only @tanvir_chosen. Tanvir came in with a simple enough request: Can you help me get back to doing pain free pushups, pullups and deadlifts? Thankfully, we were able to work together and develop a plan that identified and resolved the underlying dysfunctions that manifested in her restrictions.
1) Suboptimal passive and active wrist extension
2) Restricted forearm pronation
3) Restricted shoulder internal rotation
All of of the above conspired to create dysfunctional movement patterns while Tanvir attempted some of her favourite compound exercises.
After working to correct the myofascial imbalances, we went to work on creating some lasting change with respect to active control in the newly created ranges of motion. Tanvir is one of the most dedicated people I've ever met, so I'm not surprised she was able to successfully implement the #FRC system (namely #pails and passive end range lift offs) in her daily routine.
It takes some time and hard work, but the results are always worth it!
Next step: handstands!!!

"When fighting back pain you'd be remiss to ignore your psoas, which is the most important muscle involved with flexing your hips and is also the only muscle that starts at the low back vertebrae and crosses the pelvis and hip... Due to inactivity, a life of sitting and other issues this muscle can be pretty unreliable when you're a back pain sufferer. 😒 In this video I'm focusing on intensely flexing my hip while trying to keep a neutral spine and engage my core. Controlling your end range of hip flexion as shown in this video while keeping a upright spine is one of the keys to a healthy back! 1️⃣ Start facing a wall at a 45deg angle, 2️⃣ Bring the foot that's away from the wall toward the wall perpendicularly 3️⃣ Bring your torso upright and press your hands hard into the wall, 4️⃣ Take a deep belly breath in through your nose, 5️⃣ lift the leg as high as you can while exhaling and continue pressing into the wall. 6️⃣ Lower slowly and repeat a few times per side. #ActiveLiftOff #FRC #isometrics #PAILS #RAILS @drandreospina @michael_boyle1959"

So what to do after stretching the shoulder and increasing ROM with PAILs and RAILs? Well you have control that range range. Here is an exercise I love requiring absolutely no equipment, although if possible holding something such as a lacrosse ball or tennis ball helps.

Here I start by laying on my side making sure I don't compensate with my thoracic spine, then I do some very slow intense (look at my face struggling this video is sped up 2x) sidelying shoulder CARS. One think I love about performing these in sidelying is the assistance of gravity it helps "cut the angle" because gravity is pushing ⬇️ on your arm. I did about 5 tough reps of these after the exercise I posted yesterday to help control my newly acquired ROM.

None of this works as well if you're not irradiating properly and safely, meaning drawing a breathe into your lower abdomen and tensing all of your muscles isometrically except a slightly less intense contraction at the joint being worked. Hamstring Iso variations! @physiofitness_pt 😥 I'm the person that has to hit multiple sets of deadlifts before I even *feel* like my hamstrings are doing their job... These are game-changers for me! Try holding these isos for at least 20 seconds before you lift! 🏋
1) Standing HS iso || my personal favorite, because you have to really create full body tension - grab a Pilates ring and press yourself against a wall or pillar, while crushing ribs, hip, and knee flat against it. Wedge the ring between your 🍑 and foot, and cruuuush.
2) Foot blocked HS iso || for those that have more mobility*💃🏻Hold down your front foot, keep the chest up, and push hips straight to help lock the spine.
3) Half kneeling HS iso || maintain a posterior pelvic tilt and use a ☟downward force on the poles to crush your ribs down as much as possible.
