No I wasn’t playing golf today. This was captured yesterday at a course that is considered by many to be the toughest in the US. Can you take a guess? More photos to come this week.
I spent yesterday morning here as I was invited for a tour and it made me think about the first time that I learned to play golf. I was a junior in college and I thought that golf would be an easy two credit course. Besides, you are hitting a ball with a stick-how hard could that be?
I remember the first day of class. The instructor also happened to be the college football coach. My husband, then boyfriend at the time played football there and many of his fellow players were in the class. I knew when they came to class donned in golf shirts and their own clubs that this was going to be rough but I was up for the challenge.
After some practice that morning it was time for me to tee off. My hands were sweaty and I was thinking about all of the other places that I would rather be in the world. Instead, I was in the middle of a college football field with my awkward golf stance. That is the day it happened...
I stepped up to swing and hit the ball so hard and wrong that it flew towards a Porto Potty,(outdoor toilet), off to the side of the field. From there it ricocheted off the side of it and headed towards my classmates. I remember the coach yelling, “Fore!” It almost hit my friend Moses as I watched him take cover and cower in fear.
For the rest of the course I was the underdog. My approach to hitting a ball was more like an angry person playing baseball. My club looked more like a weapon in the hands of an auburn haired maniac. You couldn’t help but laugh in pain.
That semester I would hear the word, “ Fore!”In my sleep. I didn’t care. I was not going to cower and quit. They were stuck with me.
How did this all end? I’m happy to say that I got an A in golf. Maybe it was due to my determination or the coach’s sheer entertainment of watching his students run for cover. I will never be sure.
Flash forward, I’m still terrible at golf. I will leave that to my husband.
