Found a little friend while checking the oysters! This is a pea crab. Female based on the translucent body. Technically a parasite as it lives in the oyster’s gills and eats what the oyster eats. But the Rappahannock provides enough for everybody, so no harm done. We take them as a sign of a healthy river. They are considered a delicacy that some people eat raw with the oyster or cook separately. Anybody done that? I haven’t brought myself to try it just yet.
Minor crisis of conscious this morning. I’ve never both been proud of a thing and wanted desperately to eat it. Not super conflicted, obviously. The camera got swapped for the knife pretty quick, but a little conflicted. I did put a few back for market, if anyone wants to come claim some!
