Deep breathing may save your life.... and your sanity! Chances are when less than desirable emotions come flooding in, your breaths become short and shallow. Most of us are rarely breathing deeply on a good day under the best of conditions, which means we are missing out on a simple way to improve our life on the daily and reduce the impact of stress.
It is both instinctual and habitual for the body to respond to stress by tightening muscles, increasing the heart rate, and bringing the breath into a shallow and quick state. Additionally, your body starts dumping adrenaline and cortisol into your system. A sustained physiological response to stress, anxiety, and fear can lead to cardiovascular disease, hyper tension (high blood pressure) digestion issues, weakened immune systems, and depression to name only a *few*. How Can Slow Deep Breathing Help You?
1. Increased oxygen delivery to every system of the body improving functionality, mental concentration, and stamina.
2. Your muscles relax - when breathing properly it is difficult to maintain physical tension in the body.
3. Lower Blood Pressure - blood vessels dilate (get bigger) as muscles release tension. This can return blood pressure to normal ranges.
4. Cleansing & Endorphins - quality breathing supports proper functioning of the Lymphatic System (think Merry Maids of the body), while also triggering the release of 'feel good' endorphins.
Watch for Part 2: Using The Breath to Melt Physical Tension. We will walk you through four short steps for reducing emotional stress and physical tension/pain in as little as 5 minutes.
