Our time at Senyati was short but amazing! In the evening we sat near the water hole and watched as the elephants came and went. From our bed we heard lions throughout the night.

I hope this encourages you all as much as it encouraged me. “He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; He triumphed over them by Him.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:14-15‬ ‭

Stage & Mine Road to Nevada City Leg 3 of Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition.

On the way to Boot Hill, we came across an “Old Stage Road” sign, of course, had to follow as we made our way to Nevada City for the afternoon, while exploring mining trails for relics and possible dispersed camping spots, for the evening.

If your going to retrace a Stagecoach road, you have to remember what once traveled here -the Wells Fargo office, Virginia City, Montana, the primary link to other parts of the country, and a long haul in 1870s to Salt Lake City or Fort Benton.

OK, I have a weak spot for old stage routes.

This segment is short, but sweet!.

Watching the foreverly beautiful sunset with the best people 💕 @morganblaze_ @p_padrino

When we first began our trek through Africa there were many things that were a bit frightening, including these gentle giants.
But I have learned to appreciate their presence, their grace and am in awe of their silence when in movement.

Go star gazing any chance you get.

Boot Hill on Leg 3 of Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition. Three days after crooked Sheriff Plumber was hung in Bannack, pickets were set up by hundreds of miners recruited by the Vigilantes to ensure non-of the six gang members spotted in town, could not leave. The following day five were hung and taken to Boot Hill, that hovers over the north side of Virginia City.

Francis M. Thompson, who was one off the thousands gathered to witness the hangings wrote about it in his book Tenderfoot in Montana:

Frank Parrish went without a word but Jack Gallager, standing with the halter around his neck, asked for a last drink of whiskey. He was granted his wishes but the noose was too tight, he shouted “ Slack that rope and let a man take a parting drink, won’t you.” He cried and swore by turns. His last words were “I hope forked lightning will strike every strangling villain of you”, as the box was kicked out from under him.

Seeing the contortions of Gallager’s body, Boone Helm exclaimed “Kick away old friend, my turn comes next. I’ll be in hell with you in a minute. Every man for his principals; Huraay for Jeff Davis, let er rip!

George “Clubfoot” Lane for his role as a spy while operating a shoe repair kiosk in a store where gold was often stored and Hayes Lyons as a telegraph operator, both kept the gang well informed of targets for the road agents; took their fate peacefully.

Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition: Leg 3- Virginia City was saved by one man who was alarmed that this largely intact, albeit dilapidated, iconic Old West town was being used for firewood in the 1940’s.

Charles Bovey, was one of the heirs of a family business that would become known as General Mills. He knew at an early age he was not cut out for Ivy League colleges. Instead his father sent him to apprentice in a mill in Great Falls, Montana where he fell in love with the relics of the Old West and soon left the family business, took up ranching and collecting old west buildings and their contents.

Not only did he save and stabilize over two hundred 1860’s - 1880’s Virginia City structures, Bovey was a master at recreating period-correct interiors. Some of the buildings he purchased still had all the furniture, stock or equipment, left as it was when the gold ran out and it was boarded up. Other interiors came from Montana ghost towns that met the same faith. …

The weekend is almost here!!

Shoutout to this girl for being the best of friends and listening to me when I ramble on and on about life. 💕

Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition - Leg 3- Virginia City. these iconic 4WD’s are proudly displayed on the front yard of a historical residence.

After Charles Bovey, the man who saved the ghost town from salvage, passed away, the government purchased the town buildings he had stabilized and restored into their former glory. Today these are interspaced with private holdings, most of which are residents who also share Bovey’s passion for saving icons of the past.

Thankful for good friends. 🙌

Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition Leg 3: Virginia City Bale of Hay Saloon, first built for J.F. Stoer, a grocery and alcohol merchant in 1869, later operated as the Smith & Boyd Saloon until 1908. It stood vacant until 1945 when Charles Bovey purchased and reopened it. The main part is still as Charles found it in 1945 but he had to bring in a new bar and back bar from Benchland Montana.

The most successful brewer along Alder Gulch was the Gilbert Brewery, one of the first in Montana. As with most structures in Virginia City, the old brewery has been stabilized and is kept looking much the way it did in the day. Few examples of its type that still stand today (pic 2).

One of the first saloons built in Virginia Cirty in June of 1863, stands today, but as it looked after the 1882 conversion to C.F. Sauerbier Blacksmith, a enterprise that operated until the 1930’s when it was boarded up. In stayed that way until it was purchased by Charles Bovey and opened to the public (pic3).

(pic. 4-5) Virginia City as described by Nataniel P Langford, 1890 in his book Vigilante Days & Ways: “The number of drinking and gambling saloons greatly was greatly in excess of stores and private dwellings…the shouts of frequent horsemen as they rode up and down the streets, the rattle of vehicles arriving, and departing for the miner’s camps, troops of miners, Indians, gamblers, the unmeaning babble of numerous drunken men, the tawdrily apparelled dancing women, of the hurdy-gurdys, altogether present a scene of life in an entirely new aspect to the person who for the first time entered a mining town. It is a feature of modern civilization which cannot elsewhere be found”.

Montana Ghost Town Overland Expedition - Leg 3: Virginia City – the best living ghost town in America – hands down. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark, a collection of 248 buildings operated as an open-air-museum, but unlike ghost towns like Bodie, it is very unstructured and approachable, 24-7.

This incredible town was saved by one man, Charles Bovey, who was alarmed that this, largely intact, albeit dilapidated, Old West town was being used for salvage in the 1940’s.

Bovey spent the next 30 years stabilizing and recreating interiors as they looked into their former glory. The collection was taken over in 1997 by the state. Many of the buildings are still in use providing services and residents live in the historical homes. …
