Even the most dedicated of Off-road and Overland children eventually succumb to the grind of long stretches of seat time.
It's oftentimes much easier to endure a long ride as a passenger when one has a concept of how much longer it is until you arrive at your destination, regardless of if it's at the trailhead or home at the end. My older kids get it when I say it will be, "just another hour..." etc. Unfortunately, the youngest just isn't there yet. He's working on telling time, and I usually try to work practicing time telling into a ride. When he invariably asks, "how much longer until home?" I give him an answer he can't always visualize. He just doesn't know what an hour and 45 minutes equates to in his world. On my last trip, I downloaded an hourglass timer app for my phone. I set it for our projected drive time to the trailhead. We both enjoyed it;. Him because he could see or place in time, so to speak. I enjoyed it because there wasn't a single, "how much longerrrrrr?" or, "are we there yet?!?!?" from the back seat of the Jeep.
