Golconda Fort - a citadel which is not only an example of architectural marvel but also of intriguing court politics and engineering excellence. One of the most spectacular forts in India it was originally built by the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty of Warangal. It changed hands many times passing from the Bahmani rulers to the Qutub Shahis . Literally meaning a "shepherd's hill " it is practically impregnable by the virtue of it being on a 150 meter high hill. Hauntingly beautiful , it also enclosed a city renowned for its gem trade.
Though there are many amazing features and stories which add to the mystery called Golconda here are my top 5:
- World class acoustics and air conditioning systems are modern technology . So we all thought till I experienced the same in this fort which is more than 450 years old . The acoustics were so perfectly built that a clap at the entrance gate could be heard at the Durbar Hall situated at the highest point of a hillock note than a km away. For the air conditioning systems marvel wait for my blog 😄
- A Kali and temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman are right inside this Fort with devotees steaming in even today. If things were as secular as this then , what happened to us later ?
- दीवारों के भी कान होते है - this popular saying I think has its roots in one of the halls of this Fort where traders and common place could stay and their conversation could be heard clearly in the next room . - The fort which was originally a mud was fortified and strengthened using the top to bottom approach. -A few boulders which were left untouched and the fort constructed around it are more than 2.5 billion years old !!!!!
- There is a huge curtain wall surrounding the Fort was built in such a manner that the enemy could not get enough space to penetrate their elephants .....
