An intrinsic part of the Ladakhi culture is butter tea or gurgur, as it is called in the local language. All over the Himalayas including Tibet, the local beverage of choice is this ubiquitous hot drink, made with generous lashings of yak butter whisked into tea with salt. This is sustenance at high altitudes and provides incredible amounts of energy and keeps the body warm.
You’ll be offered steaming cups of butter tea at monasteries and local homes alike - there is an elaborate etiquette to be followed for accepting and drinking this tea.
This was the inspiration behind Bulletproof Coffee, founded in 2013 by American entrepreneur Dave Asprey. He got the idea after sampling butter tea on a trek in a remote region near Mt. Kailash in Tibet, and swore by its rejuvenating powers. Today, millions swear by it - marketed as a breakfast beverage that claims to increase mental clarity and aid in weight loss. .
