About 50 robins scattered throughout the bushes within a couple hundred yards of each other at #alexanderwildernesspark. Here is one of them feasting on berries. Robins migrate more in response to food availability rather than temperature. Fruit is the robin's winter food source. Once the berries are gone they will move on.

The final days of Autumn in Cottage Country...

'Goodbye'
3 year old Mule deer buck that made his home in the coulees along 5th avenue North Lethbridge along with another buck. I took this picture the beginning of August 2018. Several deer live here but the bucks are identifiable from their antlers. Both bucks have been killed in motor vehicle collisions recently.

50% of collisions in Alberta involve wildlife. Approximately 5 human lives are lost per year in animal-vehicle collisions. Help keep our wildlife and drivers safe. Too late for this guy. -

I came across this ice and river rock micro landscape while in search of a much more grand scene with a mountain backdrop along the Athabasca River in the Canadian Rockies. This ended up being more unique for me than my subsequent mountain shots. The blue in the ice and rocks is reflecting the clear blue sky. .

This mountain view along the shores of Lake Magog in British Columbia's Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park are among the best in the Canadian Rockies. A 17 mile hike or a helicopter ride will get you there, then pray the mountain weather cooperates. I timed my visit to coincide with larch trees displaying their autumn orange foliage. I tried to include them in most of my images when possible.

Assiniboine Autumn.

This was taken 2 years back during a trip to Assiniboine Provincial Park in the Canadian Rockies. I hiked up to this perch several times while in the area waiting for lighting conditions to side light the orange Larch trees. On this venture, I hiked down in near darkness only to find that part of the trail had been excavated by a Grizzley Bear while I was up taking photos. Close call! This is a 2 image stitch to create the panorama. The image was selected as the grand prize landscape image of the year in Nature's Best Competition sponsored by the Smithsonian and was part of an exhibit in the Museum of Natural History. It remains as part of their permanent collection. More of the story can be found by clincking my bio link and going to News Items on my site.

Probably the highlight of my photo career so far. Find many of the other fine images @naturesbestphotomagazine or on their website. -

Rundle Awakens.
Most memorable during my shoot of Banff's Mount Rundle wasn't the great view, or incredible lighting but accessing this reflecting pool. During November, the mud flats had firmed up over night and a skim of ice had formed. I tried shooting this the day before, but as i started walking out on the mud, i slowly started sinking in. Even worse was when i stopped, as the pressure created by my boots and body weight accelerated the heating of the mud and i sank faster. Not sure if i would have been able to extract myself, i abandoned for a different shot....The next morning i returned with pieces of cardboard i had pulled out of a dumpster in town and used them as snowshoes to distribute my weight and insulate my knees from melting the frozen mud as i knelt to take this shot.

I needed a break from the seascape images, so back to the mountains. An intense sunrise over Lake Magog and Mount Assiniboine in Assiniboine Provincial Park. I prefer the fall there with the orange Larch, but really any season is spectacular. I have often wondered what a view would look like from a different location and perspective on a morning like this, but unfortunately can't be in 2 places at the same time...or could I? Well, no but I happened to see another photographer's shot from a rocky outcropping above the lake. Marc Muench @marcmuenchphoto was leading a workshop and opted for the high view. I think you can find his shot in his workshop marketing material. Now I can see the view that I would have had. The clouds streaming above the peaks were somewhat unique and readily identifiable so I knew it was the same moment.

Each fall, Banff @banffmountainfestival hosts a mountain and adventure film festival that ultimately travels throughout the United States. Instead of waiting until it arrived in Portsmouth, NH, we traveled to Banff with friends to enjoy the scenery as well. This view can be had during the drive from Canmore to Banff.

- Rundle in Suspension -

At around this time of year, the sun rises behind Banff's Mount Rundle, a local icon. The optics can be be pretty crazy depending on the weather. The Banff Film Festival @banffmountainfestival
holds an annual event, so I was out there to take it in as well as the world class scenery. What I remember most about getting this shot was not the end result here, but physically getting out on these mud flats to take the shot. The mud is semi frozen with a thin skim of melt water on top. I had tried getting out there the previous AM, but my weight and the pressure of my boots on the mud caused melting of any ice so I slowly sank. I was afraid i might not be able to extricate myself - like being in quicksand. I solved the problem by pulling a large piece of cardboard (refrigerator packaging I think) out of a dumpster in town and used it as a platform for myself and tripod. I moved quickly out into position and put the cardboard down. The mud was pretty firm initially, as it was still cold and dark, but as sunrise approached the mud / ice warmed and it was a mess. After shooting, I kept moving and replacing the cardboard as my walkway until I returned to terra firma.
