If you know me well, you'll know I'm adamantly pro-choice. In many parts of the world, women are denied access to reproductive healthcare. Sometimes, this is due to lack of funds, often, it's because of backward laws that insist on deciding what women should do with their own wombs. 🥀
Today, I donated a small amount of money to asn.org.uk - an organisation that helps women from Northern Ireland and the Isle Of Man seek safe abortions in England. They pay for their travel costs and carefully select selfless members of the public willing to house them during their stay, or any other accommodation.Having failed to gain a majority government, the Tories are threatening to join with the DUP. If you know nothing about the DUP, I won't ruin the s**t show. I'll let you research them yourself, but it won't take long to understand the link between them and my donation. 🥀
Let's just be clear about something: you can never ban abortion, you can only ban safe abortion. Young, vulnerable girls have been threatened with criminal charges for using dangerous methods to abort unwanted children. These girls need help, instead, they are treated like criminals. In very conservative places like NI, young people are often not even given comprehensive sex education to protect against unwanted pregnancies. 🥀
There's a famous quote that says: "if men got pregnant, you'd be able to get an abortion at an ATM machine". I think there's a lot of truth in this. Men's bodies are not subject to the same social, cultural and political football that women's bodies are. Almost everytime I've debated this topic, I'm eventually told: well then women just shouldn't have sex! Are men told to show such restraint? Hardly. Can you actually imagine if all the women in the world went on pussy lockdown? Careful what you wish for, Wonder Woman has us all hunting for Themyiscira. 🥀
This is a small step in my quest to become a better and more engaged activist. I will not stand for a world where a woman's womb is the property of everyone else. 🥀
