The kibbutz—a collectively owned and run community, traditionally based on agriculture—holds a storied place in Israeli culture. The first kibbutz was Degania Alef, founded in 1909. Degania, in northern Israel (then part of Ottoman Palestine), was founded by a group of Eastern European Jewish immigrants. The community they founded, and the many more kibbutzim that popped up around the country, aimed to live according to the Communistic principle, “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” In the early years, kibbutz members worked mostly in agriculture. In 1927, Socialist Zionist Jewish youth movements across the country united, forming Kibbutz Artzi. Artzi kibbutzim were more devoted to gender equality than most other kibbutzim. Women called their husbands אשי (“my man”), rather than the customary Hebrew word for husband, באלי (“my lord” or “my master”). There were also differences in religion among the kibbutzim— many of the kibbutz were secular, but still wanted their new communities to have Jewish characteristics, including practicing Shabbat and avoiding work on a Saturday, adopting Yom Kippur as a day to discuss fears for the future of the kibbutz, and collective bar and bat mitzvahs for children. Although the members did not pray several times a day, holidays like Shavuot, Sukkot, Passover were marked and celebrated with dances and meals. After the establishment of Israel in 1948, members faced both challenges and opportunities. The influx of immigrants, mainly Jewish, offered the kibbutzim a chance to expand with new members and perform more labour, but it also meant traditionally Ashkenazi kibbutzim would have to adapt to Jews with different backgrounds. During the Cold War, Israel began siding with the West instead of the Soviet Union. Dining halls segregated according to politics and some kibbutzim even had Marxist members leave. Although in recent times, kibbutzim have either declined or privatised, they still played a huge part in shaping Israeli culture and agriculture. Many of the original kibbutzim were founded in the upper Jordan Valley, the Jezreel valley, and the Sharon coastal plain. The... (continued in comments)

Be'er Sheva , Southern Israel . Former Ottoman Governor's early 20th Century house . Ottoman Palestine was lost to the British around 1917 ( during the First World War ) and on November 2nd of that year , Lord Balfour declared a British Mandate in Palestine , announcing that the land would be ultimately become the National Homeland of the Jewish people ( provided existing populations' rights were respected ) See Google for the Balfour Declaration text . In 2004 , the Israeli government refurbished the building as a contemporary art gallery and - on October 30th 2017 , a Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation / SCAF affiliated exhibition of Australian contemporary art , curated by Emily Rolfe in association with Dr Dalia Manor and with the assistance of Dr Gene Sherman - will open in the Negev Museum of Art ( the pictured Ottoman era house turned exhibition space ) The date selected for the opening marks the 100th anniversary of the Charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade - a mounted attack by 1000 Australian & New Zealand soldiers on horses shipped from Australia where they had been bred for desert conditions . Overcoming 7000 Ottoman Turks the soldiers reached the critically important wells of the city and effectively turned the tide of the war. #israel #middleeast #exhibitions #australiancontemporaryart #ottomanempire #ottomanpalestine #balfourdeclaration #be'ersheva #hundrethanniversary #firstworldwar #militaryhistory

Post card showing the American Consulate when it was inside the Jaffa Gate (c. 1857) as well as the Tower of David and Christ Church on the left behind the U.S. flag. Ruth Kark's book American Consuls in the Holy Land, 1832-1914 states that this picture was drawn by an American traveler and cites a report in the U.S. National Archives by U.S. Consul Frank de Hass on April 28, 1877. Gene's Bibliothèque : Research for London based Australian artist , Shaun Gladwell re his Sherman family commissioned filmic / Virtual Reality / 3D printed sculptural work - poetically capturing the essence of a largely forgotten major military battle . The Charge of Australian 4th Horse Light Brigade 800 mounted soldiers of the Australian 4th Horse Light Brigade , fighting under the British flag in Ottoman occupied Palestine, set in train a far -reaching set of events . 4000 Ottoman Turks , installed in trenches, were defeated by a small group of Australian country boys, riding their own desert bred horses transported from rural Australia . The men and their equine companions, courageously charged across 6 km of unprotected open ground , liberating Be'er Sheva , now in Southern Israel & paving the way for the British capture of Jerusalem . The British Mandate in Palestine was set up -which ultimately lead to the establishment of Israel . The Australians' real contribution to the fall of the Ottoman Empire ( 31st October 1917 ) was insufficiently recognised . In December 2018 , with WWI over , Bedouin villagers continuously robbed and murdered surviving soldiers-many of whom felt forced to shoot their beloved horse comrade -in -arms so as to prevent the animals becoming starved , overworked Bedouin farm hands . In retaliation for a particularly vicious pointless murder , a band of ANZACS burnt down and brutally slaughtered male Bedouin villagers . General Allenby horrified by this rogue affront to British military protocol ,refused to recognise their earlier courage when selecting medal recipients . An excellent account of a mostly heroic partly shameful moment in military history . #militaryhistory #ottomanpalestine #chargeofthelightbrigade #shaungladwell #telavivmuseum #balfourdeclaration #foundingofisrael #contemporaryart #worldwarone #pauldaley #historicaljournalism #virtualreality
