This is where it all began.
What can I say about this film that hasn’t been said before?
It’s a piece of cinematic history that launched a vast universe greater than our own. The story and characters in this are pure gold. It introduces us to some of the greatest heroes and villains in the history of entertainment. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are my two favorite characters of the whole saga. We also get a great supporting cast in the form of the stand out character Obi-Wan Kenobi played by Sir Alec Mcguiness. Wow I can see why he was nominated for an Oscar as well as the film itself winning for multiple ones as well. Watching this after the prequels is even better since we see his character grow from a young but wise padawan to a veteran with seemingly nothing left to loose. Every performance in this film is such a delight. The cinematography and music are just legendary. The twin suns scene is not only one of my favorite moments in the saga, but one of my favorite moments in the history of cinema.
Pacing is sometimes off, but honestly it is such a minimal issue for me. Line delivery by Hamill, Ford, and Fisher are a little off, but it’s more of a script issue. That’s really all the negatives I can think of.
I could keep going on and on about everything I loved about this film, because it just gets so many things right. The 70s are the golden age of cinema to me and this film is one of my favorites from the period as well as one of my favorites of all time. It is revolutionary, fresh, and everything that makes me love about films.
