When you see a herbivore 'chewing' bones, DON'T WORRY, they havent decided over night that they are now a fan of meat 😜

This is actually a common eating habit which allows herbivores to get the nutrients they lack. This practice is called Osteophagia!!! ☠

Animals do this to supplement their diet with calcium and phosphorus that their bodies may be lacking. They will often use bones that are randomly found out in the bush 🍃

The giraffe is a strict herbivore, they merely chew on bones in order to gleam some particles of the nutrients they need. The same is true in many other species of herbivore; many types of antelope as well as buffalo and zebra have been observed chewing on bones that they have found in the bush!

Why Do Giraffe Eat Bones?

Giraffe are the tallest herbivores in the world and feed off a variety of plant species. They are not carnivorous, however, when nutrients are lacking in their normal daily diets, and they become nutritionally stressed, they will eat bone to get the phosphorous and calcium their bodies require. This is called Osteophagia.

This Bucklands Giraffe spent about 20 minutes “chewing” this particular animal bone, dropped it into some thick bushes by accident and rather quickly found it again, only to continue chewing on it some more. #bucklandsprivategamereserve #gamedrivesatbucklands #gamedrives #gamedrivesightings #osteophagia #bones #eatingbones #giraffe #talltallertallest #beautifulgiraffe #beautifuleasterncape #explorenature #adventureinsouthafrica #greentherapy #wanderlustoutdoors #shotleft #shotleftsa #menseselense #sathroughmyeyes #africanamazing #photosafari #myshot_sa #instanature

Seriously? Me, smoking? No, I am just chewing on a bone to get some calcium.. 😉🦒 Did you know that giraffe sometimes chew on bones found on the ground to get some calcium? It is called osteophagia. Bones contain a lot of nutrient such as phosphorus and calcium so they chew on bones in order to gleam some particles of nutrient they need even if they are strictly herbivores. This is a behavior that you don’t get often the opportunity to see out in the bush!! #giraffe#chewingbone#osteophagia#cleveranimals#safarilife#africa#tiago#thisiswhyiloveafrica#greaterkruger#klaserieprivatenaturereserve#elegant#animals_shots_#marvelous_shots#capturethewild#destination_wild#canongirl#canonphotography#africageophoto#onlyinafrica#natgeoyourshot#natgeowild#alwayshappyinthebush#girafe#nature_lovers#animals_captures#wildlife#wildlifephotography @wildlifeofafrica @latestgreaterkruger @canon_photos @klaserieprivatenaturereserve @wonderlust.southafrica @onlyafrica @africanamazing @african_portraits @wildlife.hd @wildlifeplanet @featured_wildlife @wild.planet @shots_of_animals @animal.bestpics @animals_magic_ @getawaymagazine

An interesting and rather unusual sighting in #Zululand. This female #giraffe decided that she was lacking a bit a calcium in her diet. She bent down and picked up an old femur bone and proceeded to chew on it. Since giraffe are herbivores feeding mainly on leaves from acacia trees and sickle bush, they sometimes lack certain vitamins. They get calcium from feeding on the bones of animals that have died, either due to predation or old age. In this video you can see the female chewing on the bone and trying to keep it in her mouth.

This behaviour is quite common in giraffe and is known as #osteophagia. Animals do this to supplement their diet with calcium and phosphorus that their bodies may be lacking. Osteophagia is more simply known as the “eating of bones.” Like many #animals, giraffe are also known to consume soil or clay for the same reasons. This is called geophagy and helps animals to acquire essential minerals that their bodies might be lacking, such salt, iron and zinc. Geophagy and osteophagia is very common in #mammals – especially ones that rely predominantly on plant food.

🥜Historical evidence supporting the idea of calcium and phosphorus deficiency associated with the extinction of giraffes in China and Asia is the transformation of the biome from forest to grassland 6-8 million years ago (Mitchell & Skinner)
.
Nutrient supply, particularly Ca, was deficient: the Ca content of grass is approximately 0.42% (Dougall et al, 1964)
.
Preferred diets of the African giraffe is leguminous browse (Pellew, 1983; 1984), the Ca content of which is 1.9% and which has a Ca:P ratio of 7.7:1 compared to 2:1 for grass (Pellew, 1984; Taylor, 1989; Mitchell & Skinner, 2003a)
.
So, giraffes can obtain 4-5 times more Ca from legumes than from grass
.
A Ca:P ratio above 7:1 in domesticated ruminants would result in clinical signs of P deficiency (McDowell, 1992; Underwood & Suttle, 1999)
.
This would include osteophagia, a known symptom of P deficiency (Theiler et al., 1924)
.

#osteophagia ,bone eating behavior...this reticulated giraffe was bending down to collect a neck vertebrae, which she kept chewing on for about twenty minutes... Normally, they do this in order to obtain trace elements such as calcium and phosphorus, which are not readily available in their normal plant fibre diets.. #osteophagia #osteophagy #reticulatedgiraffe #laikipia #segeraretreat #wildlifephotography #tembeakenya🇰🇪
