I think it's safe to say that Lynne Ramsay is in another league of her own. Tilda Swinton masterfully stars as a troubled mother who attempts to come to terms with the horrific acts her son has committed. There is a short list of directors that can tackle dark subject matter without glorifying it or using it as pure shock value. Ramsay is one of these directors, as she is able to weave a genuine story that forces you to empathize with the protagonist. As for this movie, the story is definitely unconventional, but after giving it thirty minutes or so, you find yourself totally into the format. There is a lot of jumping back into the past and into the future, but I think that is the most effective way that this story could have been told. The whole cast was spot on with John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller complimenting Swinton magnificently. I say this every time, but Ramsay is so good at combining both traditional filmmaking and art house. There are a lot of themes throughout the film, and Ramsay presents them in unorthodox ways, but it is never jarring. This is definitely a hard one to swallow, but I think one worthy of your time. #GuertlerGuarantee
