"In 2015, Canada’s federal government made a public commitment to reach Aichi Target 11 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, by protecting 5% of Canada’s marine and coastal areas by 2017, and 10% by 2020. Achieving these conservation targets will require a significant increase in the rate of designation of marine protected areas in Canada." - an excerpt from An Evolution of Marine Protected Areas Globally and in Canada, from West Coast Environmental Law. “What is your vision for Canada’s oceans and coasts in 2020?” 📷: @cristinamittermeier in the waters off the coast of British Columbia. *

Wow you learn something new everyday - June is #orcaawarenessmonth Good month to have it too!

#orcaawarenessmonth is now over, but that doesn't mean you should stop being aware of them! Continue to educate yourself and those around you about how captivity is so wrong and horrible and get these magnificent beings in a much better environment. Here's a wonderful picture of Keiko after his wonderful release. If we did it with one orca, we can release the rest!

Orca Awareness Month nr. 7. Decided to doodle my current adoption orca, J26 Mike in my art journal! I adopted his mum Slick before and I wanted to stick with the J16's :) Mike and his family are Southern Residents, go to us.whales.org/orca-awareness-month to find out what you can do to help them and the other endangered Southern Residents. #orca #killerwhale #orcaawarenessmonth #artistsoninstagram #artjournal#

@gowhales shot this footage of some wild orcas engaging in some spyhops, and fluke and pec slaps! Wild killer whale families have miles of their ocean home to roam, whilst their captive counterparts at SeaWorld are stuck performing 'natural' behaviors for an oblivious audience. The killer whales in this video are representing 'natural behavior' perfectly, no matter how hard SeaWorld try's, they'll never be able to replicate this. Remember, it's only natural if it's in their natural environment; the ocean. -

No Fish, No Blackfish. June's Orca Awareness Month was created to raise awareness about the problems facing the Southern Resident orca's. One of their biggest threats is food shortage. Southern Residents specialize on salmon, mainly Chinook salmon. Because of dammed rivers, salmon populations have gone down and so has the orca population. Chinook runs in the orca's range have been listed as endangered for over 20 years, the orca's themselves for 12 years and yet nothing has changed. If we want the SRKW's and the salmon to survive action is needed. Go to http://us.whales.org/issues/time-is-running-out-dont-let-orcas-be-dammed for more information on how you can help. Watercolor and colored pencil in Moleskine sketchbook. I used slightly surreal, fantasy colors and very few salmon as opposed to a school, because unless something changes these animals will soon be only fantasy. #orca #orcaawarenessmonth #killerwhale #southernresidentorcas #salmon #nofishnoblackfish #watercolor #moleskine #artistsoninstagram

In celebration of Orca Awareness Month (June) - we've been hard at work adding a whole orca pod to the ByteSizeTreasure family!! To find out more about Orca Awareness Month, and what you can do to help orca conservation, visit Whale and Dolphin Conservation's website: https://goo.gl/uj9w6B

Did you know that June was #OrcaAwarenessMonth ?? Cause it was! Orcas are by far one of the most intelligent living creatures on our planet. If you just take a few minutes to learn about their lifestyle, you will quickly see why they should not be allowed in captivity. #orca #orcinusorca #thanksbutnotanks #boycottseaworld #anticap

June is #OrcaAwarenessMonth and today is Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that Southern Resident Killer Whales are incredible predators and work together in their family groups to catch their prey? Often, when one Orca catches a salmon they will share it around with every other member of the group to ensure that no one goes hungry. As salmon populations fluctuate there can be devastating effects on the #SRKW so protecting salmon is one of the best ways to protect these whales! ⠀
