Yesterday was the last day of #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Even though everyday is Orca Awareness Day for me. Orca are actually a type of dolphins and I do not believe that they should be living in captivity. Please do not support dolphin shows, swim with dolphin companies or parks with these types of mammals in tanks. It is just heartbreaking! And as always, feel free to message me if you have any questions about non-profits to support or books to read about these magnificent mammals! ✌🏻❤️🐬

One of these days I'll take a decent photo of an orca... But for now I'm grateful to spend time watching these amazing creatures. Looking forward to my next tour with @kenaifjordstours

It's #FunFact Friday and June is #OrcaAwarenessMonth! Did you know that New Zealand is home to between 150-200 killer whales who can be seen most frequently from December and March?! They forage on numerous species but some specialize in catching stingrays right in Wellington Harbour!⠀

This is Surf (A66) a Northern Resident Orca travelling off the north coast of Vancouver Island. I saw him and his Mom Sonora (A42) and the rest of his family a few summers ago while they were travelling through this beautiful area.
Some good news for Orca in Canadian waters this week as Transport Canada placed a mandatory exclusion zone of 200m around all Orca, for all marine vessels , effective July 11. Previously this zone had been just a recommendation . This is an excellent move that will make life easier for these magnificent but endangered animals, particularly for the Southern Resident orca who after a recent loss are now down to 75 members. But there is still more to be done so let's hope the Govt of Canada continue to consider the conservation of orca and all marine life in future decisions

Happy Orca Awareness Month!
Orca Awareness Month, a chance for us to celebrate an iconic wildlife species and reflect on the plight of these amazing creatures.
A key part of our “Winter Whales of Norway” expedition is the education program. It gives you a chance to understand what you are seeing and place it in a broader context. Our approach is to combine presentations on board the ship with interpretation in the field, to create Orca Awareness wherever we can! 📷 Henrik Egede-Lassen

In June 1961, fishermen in the Strait of Georgia convinced the Department of Fisheries to install a machine gun overlooking the orca-rich waters of Seymour Narrows, northwest of Campbell River. The firearm was intended to kill as many salmon-stealing killer whales as possible. Fortunately—and bizarrely—the reason the project was scrapped was not because it was cruel and short-sighted, but because it posed a threat of forest fires igniting on the opposite shore from ricocheted bullets. The gun was never fired, and subsequently removed.

This June, we have been celebrating #OrcaAwarenessMonth, and a more empathetic approach in the way humans view orcas. Of course, there is still much, much work to be done. Click the link in our bio to help protect two of the orcas most important food sources—salmon and herring—and join @PacificWild in helping these iconic whales return to their former glory.
