A disheartening image of 15-year-old K36 “Yoda”, an endangered Southern Resident killer whale, has emerged showing her ribs protruding. This photo gives us an insight into the endangered populations struggle to survive. Her condition indicates she’s suffering from malnourishment and is slowly starving to death, which is a result of the lack of Chinook Salmon. K36 is a very valuable member of the Southern Resident orca population as she’s one of the few remaining females that could potentially reproduce. K-Pod has not been seen with a living calf since 2011. With the recent loss of 3-year-old J50 “Scarlet” and J35 “Tahlequah’s” calf, we can not afford to lose another member of this unique population.
The Southern Residents rely on Chinook Salmon for 80% of their diet. Unfortunately the Chinook Salmon population has declined in recent years due to overfishing and habitat loss in the Colombia-Snake River Basin, therefor they are no longer able to sustain the population of 74 individuals among the three pods that make up the Southern Residents.
We’ve lost a total of 18 Southern Resident orcas in the past 5 years and the number will continue to rise if immediate action is not taken. For the sake of the beloved Southern Residents, stop eating salmon, sign petitions demanding that the four lower Snake River Dams are breached, and call Senator Cantwell at (206)220-6400 as well as Governor Inslee at (360)902-4111 and leave the same message.
For every day the dams remain, the Southern Residents are pushed closer to extinction.
