@chefbenchurchill is into making desserts that gross people out, at least at first.
Since 2017, the UK-based confectioner has been concocting what he calls “perception challenging dishes” that are made to look like disgusting, stomach-churning real-life objects, such as maggoty apples and used ashtrays. Of course, the joke’s on the diner who, once they take a bite, discovers the deserts actually taste quite good. That moldy orange is actually cleverly applied bubblegum merengue dust. That used kitchen sponge is actually an olive oil cake topped with mint crumbs and frothy milk, and that nasty ashtray is actually a delicious vanilla panna cotta dessert.
In a blog post from July 2017 titled “Could You Eat a Washing Up Sponge???” Churchill explained the motivations behind his strange creations. “This was something I wanted to play with,” he wrote. “How about creating a dish that immediately turns you off, confuses you, makes you question your choice? But, once you take the leap and dig in, [it] completely amazes you with it’s taste.”
