Nova Varoš is a hidden gem in Serbia. Tourism has not hit here yet, which I found surprising. Many of the locals told me I was the first US citizen they had met. When you get nature like this without all the tourists, it made for the perfect two days!
I heard about this city from another backpacker, so I looked it up and knew I couldn’t miss it. The long bus ride from Kotor was so worth it, driving through the mountains will be something I never forget. I need to come back to Montenegro to hike the north.
I made my way to the Uvac river for a boat tour. This is where the famous winding river is located. I flagged down a taxi and he drove me the 25 minutes to the start of the dammed river. I was met by a young tour guide who said I could join his next tour!
This happens to be a nature reserve which is home to the griffon vultures. Their wingspan reaches a long 3 meters!! My favorite part of the tour was hiking up the limestone walls to see the Uvac meanders. This part of the river is maze-like, with 270 degree turns! Best Part is that it’s completely natural. While we were hiking up, some huge storm clouds rolled in and opened up. Rain started bucketing down as we took our final photos. There was so much lightning, Im honestly shocked that no one was struck since we were at the highest point! The hike down took longer than it should have because the trail became a slip and slide. Totally drenched, we all made it safely back to the boat.
At the end of our tour, the guide kindly drove me back to the city!
It was a great experience coming here, I wish I had more time to do hiking in the surrounding mountains! I’ll surely be back!
