Last weeks #SpeedyTuesday highlighted a book that all of you should be familiar with, “The Right Stuff” by Tom Wolfe, and that it was the inspiration for todays book highlight “Endurance” by Scott Kelly.
Mr. Kelly mentioned this book and its many influences at least five times throughout his amazing memoire and that he wrote to Mr. Wolfe nearing the end of his historic stay at the ISS.
“Endurance” in my opinion is arguably just as important of a book as it not only covers a historical perspective which will positively have an impact on our species, but it does so with a grace that literally will leave any reader near tears at many points.
Many of the chapters start off in the past engrossing the reader in Kelly’s journey and ties it into his truly epic time on the ISS. Crafting the readers experience structurally in this manner is so effective that I found the pages flying by at an alarming rate. You not only learn about his trials and many (many) challenges, but also the sacrifices of his fiancé Amiko, and his family.
This is where the title “Endurance” hit home for me the most while reading this book. The endurance required by Kelly’s support group was impeccable and truly shows that a wonderful family is truly ones most important treasure.
Filled with history, amazing insights into his gruelling schedule, life aboard the ISS, and many fun facts such as astronauts having to go through decompression procedures after a space walk to avoid the Bends (as an avid diver this tickled me to no end), make this book an essential addition to your reading list.
It would make an amazing stocking stuffer, even for those who you have never seen with a book in their hands for if they will read anything and be appropriately moved to potentially start reading, this is the book.
PS: @european.boutique we should look into getting some Dog Fish Head 60 Minute India Pale Ale or at the very least some Miller High Life or a good Cabernet for Mr. Kelly ;)
