Mišić raste, obnavlja svoje tkivo baš u vreme odmora, kada se ne trenira. Da bi ovaj rast bio veći i obnavljanje mišićnog tkiva intenzivnije, potrebno je mišićima dati podsticaj, a to znači vežbati. Od jačine podsticaja (vežbanja), isto kao i od dovoljnog odmora i dovoljno gradivnih materija u ishrani zavisi u kolikoj meri će mišić da raste i razvija se. Međutim, pošto je rečeno da mišić raste baš u fazi mirovanja, potrebno je znati odmarati se, jer od dužine odmora zavisi koliko će mišić biti obnovljen. Odmarati se pravilno, znači znati primeniti određeni vremenski period odmaranja od jednog do drugog treninga iste mišićne partije. Na primer, nije isto da li ćete mišiće ruku trenirati svaki dan, svaki drugi dan, tri, četiri puta nedeljno ili jedanput u sedam dana. Trenirati istu mišićnu grupu svaki dan je pogrešno i to vodi neuspehu.
