'The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood.'

Happy Birthday Francois-Marie Arouet, aka Voltaire, 21st November, 1694, writer of 20,000 letters and 2,000 books, who might have struggled with his mood choice this morning, waking up at the bottom of a murky pond, on a dreich and drizzly day, hair from straight as an arrow to Farrah Fawcett Flick in three seconds flat. 🙄

This is Ordsall Hall, I pop in here for coffee following meetings with the Greek god at the hospital, not the Greek god today though, but an old flame sitting behind the desk. 😬

He asked me what I was doing now (worst, most uninspired question, ever), I blinked, gathered, and (forgive me) told him I was Instafamous and writing my memoirs in a McCottage on the beach, but he wasn't to worry I'd changed his name and vital statistics. .
He didn't get it - which is why he's an old flame - obvs.
Anyway he looked quite jowly and blowsy which improved my mood considerably.

#mansardmonday Like so many houses across America, this home was razed for a highway. #saveamansard
@Regranned from @pretty_neat_peat - The Stephen Keyes Fletcher House of 1876, formerly at 11th & Delaware Streets. This beautiful Second Empire took two years to build and the blink of an eye to demolish. Peat shot it in April of 1962 and April of 1963 being razed. Currently the location of an I-65 overpass. See bio for an interesting 1929 article on this residence. #archi_ologie #houseportrait #historichouse #historicarchitecture #oldhouse #oldhouselove #oldnorthside #oldarchitecture #secondempire #mansardmonday #indianalandmarks #indianapolis #neatpeat - #regrann

You guysssss. The original hardwood floors at #theblondevic are refinished, and we’re kind of freaking out over here! When we bought the house, each room’s floors had a different stain/paint color on them, not to mention the dust and dirt everywhere. We knew there was some cool directional detailing going on but didn’t expect THIS. We can’t wait to show you more when we can walk on them!! #theblondevic

@Instabur.pro can hide your plumbing! 🏡#insiderhome

So looking forward to slowing down these next few days. ❤️ Have a great night friends! .

Things are starting to get festive in here and I’m certainly not mad about it ☺️❤️🌲 #1902Christmas

This quirky, colorful home is one of many incredible architectural examples in the Bristol Waterfront Historic District. Laid out in 1680, it is also the oldest planned community in the state. A busy harbor town, Bristol was known in its early days as a hub for shipbuilding and the slave trade. James DeWolf of the prominent Bristol DeWolf family was presumably the second wealthiest man in America at the time of his death and along with other members of his family was responsible for bringing over 11,000 slaves to America, primarily to Southern states. He was also involved in the rum, sugar, and coffee trades, and had plantations in Cuba operated by slave labor. The early history of our country is so complex and hard to comprehend, isn’t it? #bristolri

Big family lunch at @narrowlimehouse with kids and grandparents today, and then a wander around Limehouse. It’s not a part of London that gets much attention on Instagram, but it has some lovely old buildings.👌🏻
And I don’t know about you, but I always like those parts of London best that have an interesting history but fly a little bit under the radar, at least as far as Instagram goes! 🤷‍♀️

Turret Tuesday

Happy Tuesday, and happy thoughts for those of you who are meal-prepping, decorating, or traveling today! 🦃🌽 P.S. This shot is from friend and contributor @hellolidy, and features her rad kitchen makeover last year. 🖤

Albion B. Shepard house in Marathon, TX. Built by a retired sea captain. Couldn't get any further from the sea than West Texas!

Throwback to our floor board planing party (see previous post ➡️). These boards need probably three more passes each through the planer. But they will have to wait until we get back from Thanksgiving in NC! This is our first trip away from Louisville since our move and I was rather sad seeing her skyline in the rear view mirror but I am thankful for getting to see family!

Tonight was a huge night for local preservation efforts as the City Commission voted to add 5 new properties to the Lawrence Register of Historic Places. I wrote the nomination (my first ever) for the Lee Zimmerman House c. 1955, pictured. This project has been a year in the making, but I'm stoked to see such a unique mid-century modern house (designed by architect Warren Heylman) on the Register. Cheers to all who made this preservation win possible! 🥂

This brick home in Dubuque, Iowa, is an example of French Second Empire Design. Element of classic Victorian architecture, such as a mansard rood and decorative windows, grace the exterior. Inside, you'll five five bedrooms, four bathrooms, 12-foot ceilings, oak floors, marble fireplaces, and a gourmet kitchen. What do you think? ⠀⠀

I am often captivated by the architecture of our old stone house. At times it scares me and then it's wistful and even inviting. Being born in a different country and then growing up in Kansas City has made the country life a very reflective space. There are a lot of quiet nights and you can really listen to your thoughts. This a closet door inside a bedroom. I can only imagine what life was like back then.
