Charles XV, born May 3, 1826, Stockholm. King of Sweden and Norway. Third monarch of the Bernadotte dynasty. Exercised very little real political power mostly leaving the ruling of his realm to the Riksdag. Extremely popular among his subjects nicknamed “Kron-Kalle” for his folkish ways. A strong believer in the Scandinavism movement. Wanted to send troops to Denmark’s aid during said country’s war with Prussia and Austria (1864) but was vetoed by the Swedish government. A skilful painter and poet. Renowned as a lady’s man rumoured to have a bastard child in every town and village in Sweden. Fathered only two children with his wife the Dutch princess Louise; a daughter, who according to the succession laws of the time couldn’t inherit the throne, and a son who died as a toddler. When Charles died - in Malmö, Skåne on September 18, 1872 - the throne passed to his younger brother Oscar (II). Folke Bernadotte, born January 2, 1895, Stockholm. Count of Wisborg. Diplomat. A grandson of King Oscar II. Served in the Swedish army as an officer from the late 1910s. Vice President of the Swedish Red Cross from 1943. Organised the release of over 30.000 prisoners from various Germany concentration camps during the later stage of WW2. Approached by Heinrich Himmler to broker a separate peace deal with the western powers in april 1945. Knowing very well that this particular diplomatic mission would fail Bernadotte nevertheless delivered Himmler’s plea to London and Washington. Appointed mediator in the escalating Arab–Israeli conflict in the Middle East by the newly set up United Nations Security Council in 1948. Worked for a two state solution and making Jerusalem into international city under UN control. Assassinated by members of the Zionist terrorist organisation Lehi in Jerusalem on September 17, 1948. Magnus Brahe, born September 2, 1790, Rydboholm Castle, Uppland. Count. Soldier, courtier and statesman. Member of one Sweden’s most prestigious noble houses. Fought in the wars against Napoleon as a young cavalry officer gaining praise for his bravery. A close friend and confidant of Charles XIV Johan acting as the kings link to the old aristocracy. Exercised considerable political power during the late 1820s and 1830s in his role as a royal favourite. Upheld the office as marshal of the realm from 1827. The object of harsh criticism from the liberal opposition for his conservatism. Made a lord of the realm in 1833. A great landowner and the lord of historic estates such as Skokloster and Rydboholm. Gunnar Nordahl, born October 19, 1921, Hörnefors, Västerbotten. Footballer. Widely seen as one of the greatest football strikers of all time. Played in Degerfors and IFK Norrköping in Sweden before going to the Italian side AC Milan in 1949. Played 257 games and scored 210 goals for the club. Winner of two scudetto titles and crowned capocannoniere on five occasions, still an unbeaten record in Italian football. Represented Sweden on the national stage in 33 games in the 1940s winning an Olympic gold medal in 1948. Halted his active career as a player after the 1958/59 season. Acted as manager for several Swedish teams in the 1960s and 1970s including top sides such as IFK Norrköping and AIK Solna. Retired completely from football in 1978. Ernst Linder, born April 25, 1868, Åminne, Nyland. Soldier. Relocated from the Russian controlled Finland to Sweden proper as a toddler. Joined the army as a cavalry man in 1886. Raised through the ranks reaching the position as a major general in 1927. Represented Sweden at the 1924 Summer Olympic in Paris claiming a gold medal in individual dressage. Temporarily left the Swedish service in 1918 volunteering on the white side in the ongoing Finnish civil war. Commander of the Satakunta army group and one of the officers behind the capture of Tammerfors in April 1918 and of Fredrikshamn in May 1918. A personal friend of Carl Gustaf Mannerheim. Returned to Finland during the Winter War heading the Swedish Volunteer Corps and later the Finnish army stationed in Lappland. Promoted to a full general within the Finnish army in 1940. Died on September 14, 1943, Stockholm. Matthias Calonius, born January 7, 1738, Saarijärvi, Tavastland. Civil servant and jurist. Educated at the Royal Academy of Åbo. Appointed professor of law at his alma mater in 1773. Widely regarded as one of the sharpest legal eagles in 18th century Sweden. Member of the Supreme Court in Stockholm between 1793-1800. Opted to stay in his native Finland after the Russian conquest (1809). Worked relentlessly to uphold Swedish law in the new Russian grand duchy. Held the position as Finland’s first seperate chancellor of justice from 1809. Died September 13, 1813, Åbo, Finland Proper. Stikkan Anderson, born January 25, 1931, Hova, Västergötland. Music manager, songwriter and entrepreneur. Started his career within the music industry as a productive and successful songwriter in the 1950s. Founded the record company Polar Music in 1963. Worked closely with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson co-writing and producing many of the pop group ABBA’s greatest hits in the 1970s. As head of Polar Music Anderson oversaw ABBA’s international career earning millions in the process. Instituted the prestige Polar Music Prize - by some dubbed the Nobel Prize of music - in 1989. Competed for Lotus Cars during the bulk of his Formula 1 career but also raced for teams such STP March and Collin Crabbe. Won 10 Grand Prix titles, the first in 1973 and the last in 1978. Crashed with his vehicle shortly after take off at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on September 10, 1978. Died from the injuries inflicted by the crash on September 11. Otto Reinhold Wrangel, born August 10, 1681, Huer, Swedish Estonia. Soldier. A veteran of the Great Northern War. Part of the defence of Riga in 1700, fought in Poland and Russia, wounded at the battle of Poltava (1709), stayed with Charles XII in Bender and took part in the last Carolean campaign against Norway in 1718. Captain of the elite Life Guard in 1711. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1720. Returned to the battlefield in the 1740s again fighting the Russians now in Finland. Johan Henrik Hästesko, born February 24, 1741, S:t Michel, Savolax. Soldier. One of the instigators behind the Anjala conspiracy. Started his martial career by fighting the Prussians in the Seven Years’ War. Colonel and commander of the Åbo Infantry Regiment at the outbreak of the Russo-Swedish War in 1788. Thought the war was unjust and unnecessary and soon started to plot against it. A signer of both the highly treacherous Liikkala note - proposing Finnish independence under Russian overlordship - and the later Anjala note calling for peace talks with Russia. Arrested together with the other 112 co-signers of the Anjala note and sentenced to death for high treason. Soon emerged as one of SVT:s top sports commentators with a special knack for covering tennis, table tennis and figure skating. Renowned for his colourful commentating style; the only sport commentator in history awarded a prize by the Swedish Academy (1996) for his linguistic qualities.
