The dram that kept on giving... The Springbank 1966 Local Barley is by far the best whisky of any kind I have tried. One of many vintage whiskies at The Old & Rare @whiskyshow earlier this year at The Grand Central Hotel

I actually nosed this for a good half an hour as it was so complex but so balanced at the same time. You get more of the same on the palate but nothing is overpowering with honey, cinnamon, toffee, ginger, almond and cereal notes amongst many characteristics. The finish was long and extremely satisfying

Now this is a treat for our Rare Release Wednesday! Hunter Laing's Old & Rare Single Cask, Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Caol Ila Distillery Aged 30 Years. A bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated. A golden coloured whisky with a rich vanilla nose appearing at the start, followed by rhubarb and custard before peat and seaweed come gently through at the end, leaving a long lingering and dry finish of oak and peat smoke. 💎

Ardbeg 18yo vintage 1974 by Sestante Import. Bottled around a quarter of a century ago.

Right out of the gate, why 40%?! That's a shame, but unfortunately some old #ardbeg bottles are like that, both independent and OB. My #ardbeg30 is also 40%. I wish they had done differently. But anyway.

This #ardbeg1974 is delicate. The nose was initially closed and even somewhat weird. But time made all the difference, as it should - old bottles are usually like that. Nose is olive oil, grains, green apples, lemons, with only echos of faint #peatsmoke. More like campfire. After about 40 minutes the weirdness is gone, and the nose is fantastic. Some metallic hints that you get from #whisky that's been in bottle for a very long time (this was bottled around 1992). Palate is also delicate - with pine leaves, apples again, oil and pepper, herbal tea leaves, lemons. 1974 was a great year for Ardbeg and this #ardbeg18 does show the characteristics of this great vintage. Very delicious, though a tad simple. Not sure if it's because of the low proof or getting tired in the bottle, who knows. The smoke is very, very subtle. The complete opposite of #uigeadail and #corryvreckan - if you have not had old Ardbeg you won't recognize this as a product of the distillery. But then this super subtle smoke and the oily/fruity/herbal signature is what sets very old Ardbeg apart.

Finish is long, delicious, and... yeah I maintain my opinion, just a bit too simple.

Great #singlemalt #scotch, very delicious, yet my expectation given the vintage was higher.
