It’s really easy for me to stay late at work. There’s always something that needs to be done and it seems like this week my to-do list was always a mile long.
And today it bit me.
I was working late and figured it would be fun since I had an easy 5 on the schedule. I was working at my desk when I heard thunder and checked the forecast to see a storm coming through. I quickly wrapped up what I needed to get done and headed out and on my way for my run. Only to see lightning on my way. So instead of running at the park I usually run at, I made my way on the treadmill.
Whomp, whomp.
Easy 5 miles on the treadmill and a little bit of core work to wrap up this rainy day. At this point I’m just really looking forward to sunny skies and cooler temps this weekend 😎
Mother Nature, you won this time.

The days where he used to sit around, lay around, or just nap a tad longer have already started to fade and while it makes squeezing in longer runs a bit harder, it makes working out a bit more fun! He definitely keeps things interesting but if I get a hug after each run or in today’s case, after each set 😂 that’s A-OK 👌🏻. ⁣⁣
Days are flying by too fast to sweat the small stuff. ⁣

Currently I’m #allaboutthatbase! My next 1/2 will be here before I know it, and this year I’m actually going to make sure I’m in shape BEFORE training starts. 3 easy miles on tired legs (I blame @teamryan_pt 🤣). I’ve been HR training and it seems to be paying off. I’m forcing myself to walk whenever my HR gets into a certain point. This probably seems “duh” to most people but I don’t ever seem to learn my lesson and have “easy” runs! It seems to be paying off - this pace is much closer to where I was a year ago. Side note - I am in LOVE with @oiselle spandos shorts now - they’re a little out of my comfort zone but these babies do NOT ride up. Another 8.6 mile trail run today. This run was way better than yesterday❤️ It's funny how a run can be different from one day to the next. I did 125 squats with weights yesterday so I was worried about being sore but my legs felt pretty good! I wanted thank @iab_mfg for sending me their new 3.0 shorts!! I absolutely love them!!😍 They do not ride or slip at all. Last week: slept less and ran more than I had all summer.
That’s pretty unbalanced, but I mostly got away with it. I missed all my paces on my long run workout, and my butt and back were getting real cranky and tight from flying to Boston and back (and getting home at 2 a.m. on Saturday). But I ran all my miles, including those beautiful Beantown routes, and I made it through unscathed.
This feeling of being on the edge with training and recovery feels risky, and not in a fun way. I think it’s just part of trying to get the most out of yourself.
I have accepted I’m always going to feel like I need more sleep. I am also probably always going to feel like I should run more miles. You can do some things about both of those but I don’t want a life overhaul in either direction.
I do listen to my body a lot better than I used to—RIP college track seasons when I could have avoided weeks-long injuries with a lacrosse ball and massage. And I do still want to become more dedicated. And I want to get better at having rock solid belief that MY plan is good for me and doesn’t have to be like anyone else’s plans.
In marathon training, each week’s a win to me.

58 degrees. Yes! Yes! Yes! Vacation starts today. Lots of running, hiking, sleeping and eating for the next couple of weeks.

Running for fun is just that. Fun. I think that’s the way it should be. Enjoy it! Or what’s the point! What YOU consider fun might be: going for a PR, running “easy” and taking photos along the way, running with friends, running solo, running on the street, running on a mountain, running to feel accomplished... there is NO WRONG WAY to run. Just like there is no wrong way to live. Just get out there & do you. Don’t worry about the person next to you going “faster” looking “stronger” or WHATEVER. ‘Cause I guarantee they aren’t worried about you. It’s a great feeling when you can just BE.

That’s what running is for me.

Yesterday a friend commented to me about how easy my recent running improvements seem to have been. While I suppose that could be taken as a compliment, it honestly felt the opposite. I’m the first to admit that I have been lucky in seeing results fairly quickly, but the past few months have been anything but easy. They’ve been some of the hardest I’ve ever had. I’ve worked tirelessly to improve my running. Waking up when it’s still dark to run isn’t easy. Being sore for days from a run or a strength session isn’t easy. Working my weekends around long runs isn’t easy. The mental struggle and games I play with myself are the opposite of easy. And I think all of my running friends will agree with all of these things. As runners, we sacrifice a lot for our sport and it’s rarely easy. But even during the hardest of times, I wouldn’t change a thing about it. There’s nothing quite as fulfilling as seeing results. And that’s why I’ll continue to work hard. The friend, whom I still love dearly, shall remain nameless. End rant. ☺️

Morning run:
6.0 miles || 9:19 pace

This is only my second run since the marathon. I’ve been doing a lot of active recovery through walking, but haven’t felt like running all that much.
With today’s weather just on the cusp of fall, and the excitement of new goals to chase, I think it’s safe to say that I’m done with the down time. Time to start logging more miles!
