πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ #Repost @drbirute: An infant orangutan orphan plays with his caregiver at the Orangutan Foundation International's (OFI) Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Central Borneo. Little "Trudeau" shows a play face as he pulls his caregiver's face towards him. Little orangutan orphan Trudeau is under a year old and was named after Justin Trudeau, Canada's newly elected prime minister. OFI will return Trudeau to the wild within ten years when he is old enough to fend for himself. In the meantime he goes on "soft releases" with caregivers and other infant orangutan orphans every day to the forest where he learns the ways of the wild. At his current age he doesn't really climb all that much, make a nest or play with others. But he clearly loves his caregiver as she loves him! This deep bond of affection is important for the infant orphan orangutans to thrive and survive. The caregivers become the surrogate mothers for all the orphans whose mothers were killed during forest clearing operations. Hopefully when Little Trudeau is ready to return to the forest, there will be plenty of primary rain forest still left for him to return to. #orangutanfoundationinternational #ofi #ofiaustralia #oficanada @drbirute #saveorangutans #justintrudeau #orangutanorphans #orangutan observation #kalimantan #borneo #centralkalimantan #saynotopalmoil

Two wild born ex-captive adult orangutan females who were released some years ago look on with their small infants clinging to them. They have come down from the trees to watch a small procession of strangers walk by, a procession that included the local regent or Bupati, the most important local official in the area. The people in the procession were there as they were attending the release into the wild of two more orangutans from the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in the province of Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia or Central Indonesian Borneo. The Care Center is currently providing care and support for approximately 325 rehabilitant orangutans. The main problem facing orangutan populations in the wild is massive deforestation from the establishment of palmoil plantations and timber estates. Orangutans are arboreal frugivores who cannot survive as populations in the wild without forests. #orangutans #orangutanconservation #orangutan #orangutanfoundationinternational #OFI #OFIAustralia #OFICanada #borneo #kalimantan #kalimantantengah #forestconservation

I took this photo yesterday at Camp Leakey. She is a wild orangutan whom I have known since she was a juvenile when her mother, a member of our study population, would bring her to our feeding station for released wild born ex-captive orangutans at Camp Leakey. How time flies! She is now a grandmother (as am I) and often comes to Camp Leakey and even sits on my porch with her latest infant. She has taught me that wild orangutans are very adaptable and can survive in new and changing contexts if we humans only give them a chance. That is a wild Bornean pig in the background. This little orangutan female is the latest orangutan orphan, a victim of deforestation, to arrive at OFI's Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Central Borneo. Massive clearing of tropical rain forests to establish palmoil and other plantations is one of the main factors helping drive biologically viable orangutan populations one step closer to extinction in the wild. This tiny female will need to spend years at Orangutan Foundation International's Care Center until she will be old enough and experienced enough to return to life in the wild. #saveorangutans #orangutans #orangutanconservation #Borneo #OrangutanFoundationInternational #OFI #OFIAustralia #OFICanada @drbirute #drbirutemarygaldikas #saynotopalmoil

Orangutan Foundation International staff bring branches to orangutan orphan infants at the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Central Borneo for enrichment in their sleeping quarters. It is important for ex-captive orangutans to learn how to make sleeping nests in the trees before they return to the wild. We try to start the learning process as early as we can. The infants spend their days outside but return indoors at night. At this point in their lives the infants usually don't make nests in their sleeping quarters but enjoy playing with the branches before they go to sleep. #orangutans #orangutan conservation #OFI #OrangutanFoundationInternational #OFIAustralia #OFICanada #orangutan enrichment #Borneo #DrBirute #BiruteMaryGaldikas #saynotopalmoil

At one of our distant release sites an orangutan female with her first surviving offspring looks up into the canopy in a gaze very familiar to orangutan watchers. The mother is one of the fortunate ones. She was rescued by OFI (Orangutan Foundation International) from captivity as a youngster, cared for and rehabilitated, and finally released into the forest as an adolescent. Look at her now! The problem ex-captive orangutans face is the same one wild orangutans face. The tropical rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra are disappearing at a rapid rate leaving orangutans homeless. The pulp and paper industry, as well as palm oil, can take much of the blame as forests are churned into pulp and then replaced by industrial timber plantations. The future is bleak for wild orangutan populations just as it is for all apes, great and small, in the wild. #orangutan #orangutans #orangutanconservation #orangutanrehabilitation, #BiruteMaryGaldikas #OFI #OFIAustralia #OFICanada #rainforestconservation, #orangutanorphans #orangutanrescue, #Borneo #saynotopalmoil

Just to remind us all of the tragedy facing wild orangutans in Borneo: forests, the only habitats orangutans have, are being decimated by palmoil plantations and industrial timber estates. I took this photo.Twenty years ago this was virgin tropical rain forest with thousands of wild orangutans and other wildlife. The forest was cleared and a monoculture of Eucalyptus planted. The Eucalyptus have just been logged and the desolate wasteland left will be heavily fertilized and then re-planted with Eucalyptus once again, mainly for pulp and paper. Orangutans are not koalas and cannot sustain themselves here. Orangutans become refugees in their own land, victims of a war they cannot win,a war against all wildlife that humans have been conducting for the past 50 years, a war that is based on the human capacity for greed. #orangutans #orangutan conservation #OFI #orangutanfoundationinternational #OFIAustralia #OFICanada #deforestation #saynotopalmoil

😱😱😱 #Repost @drbirute: Orangutans in their native habitat, the tropical rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra, are not afraid of water. They generally do not swim but will wade up to their chins in water. Here a subadult male wades in open deep swamp near a black water River. Another one of the orangutan infants Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) rescued during 2016 in Kalimantan Tengah, the province of Central Indonesian Borneo. He looks as though his mother was killed and he was captured not too long before we rescued him. One can never tell with rescued orangutan infants what internal injuries are hidden behind their seemingly serene and stoic faces. He looks relatively healthy but one never knows. The massive destruction and degradation of primary tropical rain forests has led to disaster for the orangutan species in Borneo. Although a few wild orangutans may survive as lone individuals wandering in relic forest for a long time to come because they are long-lived, opportunistic, semi-solitary, smart, and wide-ranging, biologically viable wild orangutan populations are on the brink of extinction and may soon vanish from this earth. We need to save and protect orangutan habitat. We need to save and protect what tropical rain forest is left and try to restore what is gone. This is what OFI is doing. This is a main part of our mission in Borneo. #orangutan #orangutans #OFI #OrangutanFoundationInternational #OFIAustralia #orangutanconservation #OFICanada #Kalimantan #KalimantanTengah #orangutanbabies #orangutanrescue #orangutanorphans #forestconservation #Borneo #saynotopalmoil

@Regrann from @drbirute - This is my first Instagram post for 2017: a big - eyed infant orangutan orphan who came to OFI's Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in 2016 as a result of deforestation due to the clearing of forest for palm oil plantations and timber estates. The orphan will spend at least 6 - 7 years at the Care Center located in Pasir Panjang, Kalimantan Tengah (Central Indonesian Borneo) before being returned to the wild assuming there is enough safe secure forest left in the wild. Wild orangutan females studied over the last 45 years in Tanjung Puting National Park give birth on average every 8 years. Male offspring start leaving the mother one or two years after the new infant is born. Female offspring tend to stay with the mother longer and the daughter may share a partially overlapping home range in adulthood with her mother. After much "forest school" experience, we try to release orangutan orphans at late juvenile hood or adolescence to conform to the wild orangutan life history pattern. #orangutans #orangutan #OFI #orangutanfoundationinternational #ofiaustralia #oficanada #drbirutemarygaldikas #orangutanconservation #orangutanrehabilitation #orangutanrescue #borneo #saynotopalmoil #Regrann

@Regrann from @drbirute - My life! Orangutan Siswi, who is the self-appointed ambassador of Camp Leakey (and we very much appreciate it) but who will spend up to a week in the forest at a time, occasionally comes into my house. She is like the country mouse who craves a visit to the big city. I know the feeling! After following wild orangutans for days at a time, coming home to Camp Leakey seemed like a return to urban living. After the stillness and tranquillity of the primeval rain forest, Camp Leakey with its several buildings and a dozen or so people seemed abuzz with activity and noise. If the door is open or unlocked, occasionally Siswi will come into my house unannounced and will often not leave until she finds something of interest, usually a fruit or something else she deems edible. Then she leaves my house and we will often sit on my porch and enjoy our friendship. Infant orangutan orphan plays in a round "hammock" swing brought to Orangutan Foundation International's (OFI) Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine (OCCQ) in Pasir Panjang, Central Borneo by OFIAustralia visitors last year. The round hammock swing rapidly became a favorite among the infants at the Danielle Nursery facility playground. I've seen as many as eight infant orphan orangutans all bouncing and playing together in and around the round hammock having the time of their lives! Adult orangutans may be somewhat asocial in the wild but it's certainly not true of orphan orangutan infants who often play non-stop with each other at the Danielle Nursery in the OCCQ. Here the little orphan female has outlasted all the other infants who were recently crowding around and is swinging satisfied in the prized hammock finally in "solitary splendour." All I can say is she won't be solitary very long! The rainy season finally arrived putting out the massive fires that destroyed millions of hectares of forest in Borneo. Orangutans are smart. They take vegetation such as branches or leaves to shield their heads from the rain. Sometimes they wear the branches or leaves like a hat! After all, about 10% of body heat escapes through the top of the head. Rain can be hard and cold in Borneo. Other times while in a nest orangutans make a second nest above them to protect themselves from the rain. Orangutans will also use leaves and branches as a type of blanket. In this drought-stricken world we clearly need rain. It is interesting that orangutans are the only anthropoids (aside from humans) who routinely use vegetation over their heads and bodies to protect themselves from the rain. Here PETA sits in the rain at Camp Leakey holding branches on her head while she huddles with her infant waiting for the rain to stop. #orangutanfoundationintl #ofiaustralia #oficanada #orangutan #orangutans #borneo #kalimantan #kalimantantengah #saveorangutans #tropicalrainforest #rain #rimbaraya #infiniteearth #saynotopalmoil

Massive deforestation, primarily due to establishment of large scale agricultural plantations such as palm oil and industrial tree plantations, is demolishing orangutan habitat at an unprecedented rate. There are over 320 ex-captives at OFI's Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine in Central Borneo. In a few years orangutan orphan Morgan will be more than ready to go back to the wild. The question is where? Most of the magnificent forests of Borneo may be gone forever by then.
