Last Friday I had an amazing day tour with Odyssey Tours based out of Belfast. Got to see the northern coast, including the Black Hedges, the Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. Got soaked in the process, but would recommend to anyone, rain or shine.
Back on the Lewis and Clark trails... Many of the big cottonwoods are more than 200 years old and were here when Lewis and Clark and crew canoed down these very waters in 1805-06. The Upper Missouri River is essentially a vein of water that cuts a deep gash through the dry soft desert-scape of the Great Plains. Every single cottonwood tree in this dry landscape is not only a much sought-after #shelter from the harsh western sun but is also a real attractor for insects, birds and other animals. Cottonwood habitat apparently supports more than half of all Montana #bird species. But because of damming and other human interventions in the Missouri watercourse over the years, these old thirsty trees are disappearing fast. Apparently one cottonwood can consume up to 200 gallons of water a day! Luckily recent conservation efforts were made to replant these native trees and many small #saplings can be spotted at all our #riverside stopovers. At one of the campsites I read a sign that urges every camper to take the empty buckets provided and help water these newly planted little trees while camping there. Loved this “greening policy” and the idea that we could easily participate in the effort to save these trees so we watered all the saplings at this campsite. The next day I mentioned what we did to one of our guides Becky who somehow managed to delegate almost everyone in the group to help water the saplings at this next camp site. With about 20 people passing on buckets of water from the river we managed to water all the saplings in no time -and had some group fun doing it too! I wish I took photos of that moment but I was too busy participating -getting wet filling up those water buckets! #thankyou#groupeffort#savethetrees#birdhabitat#water#treehugger#americanlandscape#treelove#followlewisnclark2018#lewisandclark#americanwest#odysseytours#nofilter#latergram#clayjenkinson#nature#outdoorliving#missouririver#river#summer#montana#nofilter#summeradventure#landscapephotography#uppermissouririverbreaks#wilderness#mightytree
