Keep your eyes on the skies when you visit! You may just find a feathered friend nearby!
This is a Red-shouldered Hawk. They prefer to live in forested areas with an open understory near swamps. This means our pond is the perfect environment for them! They use both hearing and sight to capture their prey. Their diet will vary with the season, but they tend to enjoy mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. They are common to the area in all seasons.

This month, the National Park Service theme takes stock of "Opening Doors." There are many ways to interpret a doorway, gate, or other kind of entrance. What do the doors at Ocmulgee National Monument mean?
Our Visitor Center is the only art moderne building in the National Park Service. Begun in the 1930's, construction was put on hold during World War II as many of the Civilian Conservation Corps members became soldiers. Completed in the 1950's, it is a unique blend of architectures and aesthetics.
It is open daily and holds exhibits explaining thousands of years of history at the park. There are two thousand artifacts on display and an orientation film.
Stepping through the doors of the Visitor Center opens a world of possibilities! Even if you've been here before, you might learn something new!

Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem here at the park. Their pollination of plants keeps everything in check and helps start up a new generation of vegetation.

This month, the National Park Service theme takes stock of "Opening Doors." There are many ways to interpret a doorway, gate, or other kind of entrance. What do the doors at Ocmulgee National Monument mean?
To begin, we take a look at our most famous doorway, the entrance to the Earth Lodge! While it may not look very grand, these logs compose a gateway into the incredible council chamber with the original 1000 year old floor.
P.S. Don't bump your head! The entrance and hallway to the main chamber are only a few feet high, so most of our visitors have to crouch.
There is so much history to be found in and around the Earth Lodge. Step inside the next time you visit!

Beautiful day for a 5 mike hike! There were many others that decided to opt outside as well which is awesome! I saw a snowy egret, great heron and (the best surprise) a bob cat! I was so happy to see the bob cat, we tried to get a little closer but he heard Sugaree trampling in the leaves. I got one crummy pic of it before my blasted iPhone died. Either way, I was thrilled to have been able to see it roaming around. I also collected a bag a trash while hiking. People are getting ridiculous...
