@Colonelbeer beach clean-up ecowarriors with #diveintoaction steward Nour Kanso "found a dead turtle on the beach with a piece of plastic wrapped around its head. This is a distressing indicator that marine wildlife are affected by our plastic waste in the ocean. And newsflash, plastics in the ocean can affect us too.

Among things you can do is firstly to REDUCE plastic consumption and opt for biodegradable products. Little things like saying no to straws, checking if body scrubs contain microplastics before buying, bring your own coffee cup and reusable water bottles, reduce soda/soft drink consumption (hey this is good for your body too), not using a coffee pod machine and buying biodegradable cling wrap (yes, they exist) can go a long way.

If you have plastic products, try your best to REUSE. Buying cosmetics from brands that encourage the reuse of their containers can make a difference. Find DIY videos for ideas on how to reuse your plastic containers. Try as best as possible to buy loose fruits and vegetables. Pressure the food sector and suppliers to rethink their food packaging.

The last resort is to RECYCLE. A common misconception is that recycling is the best solution for waste problems, but this isn't necessarily true. But if you must, check what your local council accept for recycling. Have your own designated bin at home and you'll find that the recycling bins fill up faster than organic waste bins. Imagine the amount of non-biodegradable waste you could divert from the landfills and the ocean!

Lebanon's sea is drowning in garbage and washing up onto the beaches. We cleaned this all winter 2016 and it's back with more rain. #diveintoaction tomorrow, Saturday 25 February for a beach clean up at Nahr el Kalb infront of Residence de la Mer, over 100 volunteers and scouts will be onsite participating in a #sort2recycle garbage clean up so it doesn't make its way back into the sea. Grab your friends and make your way between 12pm - 5pm. We won't have any single use plastic consumption on this clean up 💪🏼👌🏻Pizza, @sohat.lb glass bottled water, safety protection suits, reusable gloves, and fabric bags all provided for 🌞♻🐙🌊🐋. Come with a spirit of hope and a mindset to shift our consumption to disposal habits ❤🌍

Turtles symbolise Mother Nature. This female loggerhead died with a plastic bag in its throat and a hook on her tongue off Ain el Mreisseh coast in Lebanon reported yesterday by Greenarea and OBBA. How many plastic bags did you consume today? 🏗In the saddest reality of our wastefulness, in a country where 11,000 migrating birds are shot at and rubbish is dumped in landfills directly into the sea, it's a feat of mother nature's will to find wildlife surviving here amongst a nation running in survival mode in cancer rates increasing with more pollution by the day. 🐢Let her not die in vain nor drown out our possibilities and will. We are needed and called to #diveintoaction now more than ever, directly playing a hand in the destruction of ecosystems from our consumption and disposing habits and to protect and demand our right to health. 🗣Recycling support and municipality implementation, observation teams and halting the incineration plants, air pollution, waste water treatment, plastic bag and single use item reduction, national education and awareness .. the issues go on and on growing mountains of their own on the already pilled up to do lists to save the country. ♻Until then and while individuals and organisations push for progress we ask those willing and able to: Rethink//Refuse//Reduce//Reuse//Recycle//Regenerate

Sign up through @lebtivity recycling guide or get in touch with us to help find a way.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch includes 3.5 million tons of trash and for every 2.2 pounds of plankton, there are 13.2 pounds of plastic. All this plastic ending up in the oceans should not be a surprise, as only 5 percent of plastic is recycled and the United States alone uses two MILLION plastic beverage bottles every five minutes. #itstartswithyou - Refuse foam and keep spreading the word. We are polluting the Mediterranean Sea and it's washing up expanded polystyrene foam - another single use convenience, toxic to our environment and health. A ban on styrefoam type products is in our horizon towards a single use plastic free Lebanon. Can we start in Batroun municipality? Rabbits Island off Tripoli also has huge amounts of polystyrene pollution from the fishermen and tourist. Let's create another way! #microplastics

More plastic than fish in the sea by 2050 😵 Prepped and ready with the #sort2recycle fishing game for kids at the #diveintoaction clean-up in Batroun tomorrow morning. Pollution doesn't start or end with recycling and we will be teaching all about the cycle of our products and consumer choice shifts we can move towards to protect our health and the planet. We'll be cleaning six beaches and spending the afternoon with @boardnsurfleb on stand up paddle boards celebrating cleaner seas. Bus leaves downtown Beirut at 7am from the Ministry of Environment - sign up if you need a ride and rsvp, we start at 9am sharp at @colonelbeer with a registration, breakfast and an eco briefing to get into groups and clean our shores!

Each year, an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean.
Plastic entanglement kills approximately 100,000 marine creatures a year, and at least two thirds of the world's fish stocks are suffering from plastic ingestion.
This issue affects all of us.
In honour of Earth Day, I'm sharing a project I've been working on with @phillipj_1980 to raise awareness of plastic pollution.

This piece (pictured) focuses on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, situated in one of the many ocean gyres. This floating mass of plastic is twice the size of Texas, with plastic pieces outnumbering sea life six to one.

#Rethink2Regenerate! How is plastic made? Where does petroleum come from? Who eats the waste littered and reaching the sea? Do your clothes and facewash have microplastics? What packaging can we use instead and how loud is our voice at the supermarket and factories for clean ingredients and materials? What #diveintoaction promises can you make to protect the environment from our harmful footprints? Nourishing actions captured in a frame!! Sophia and Giulia came with their 5 year old brother and mum to blaze through the #sort2recycle clean-up and brought so much laughter, joy, hope and faith to the site with their collective hands, environmentally conscious big hearts and answers!! This is what we work for; hand in hand with the youth and adults to raise awareness through education and hands on actions all in the name of play and fun!
