I'm about to sound like a social justice warrior at the moment, but I need to get this off my chest. I'm posting this because I feel a PSA is in order. No, just because you're a germaphobe or a neat freak, doesn't mean you have OCD. Don't say you are so OCD because you are overly organized. What you don't get, is that OCD is a serious mental disorder that can destroy lives. Some people can't even eat properly, sleep properly, or even leave their homes, because the compulsions don't stop.
I myself had been dealing with OCD for 5 years now. It came about during a traumatic event that happened in my life. I was a compulsive hand washer, and checker. I wouldn't sleep, I would stay up for hours checking the stove and the oven, making sure they were off, for hours on end. I would also wash my hands about every 20 minutes. In scalding hot water. This got so bad that my skin literally started to peel off.
I couldn't kiss anyone, I couldn't hold anyone's hand, and I couldn't even give hugs... 😢
I've been treated since then, and no longer damage myself with my compulsions. I have come a long way, and now living a normal life again. If hadn't been helped, who knows what would have happened to me... So next time you want to joke about OCD, think before you speak.
