Blood flow restriction, or occlusion training, is a training method that’s been used for years by various athletes and coaches. It involves restricting blood flow to a limb during different forms of training and movements. The main reasoning athletes and coaches generally use for BFR training is to increase muscle size. Like with other advanced training concepts, the exact mechanisms that cause muscle size to increase during BFR training are still being researched. The theory behind this type of training is this: Muscle growth occurs best when muscle has been damaged. As we lift and put our muscle under stress, the body responds by repairing damaged areas, making them stronger and bigger (hypertrophying). There are multiple natural responses the body uses to compensate for muscle damage, but one of the main responses linked to increased muscle repair and size is called muscle protein synthesis. This is the body’s way of naturally repairing itself. With BFR training, there’s additional stress placed on the muscle regular training can’t induce (venous occlusion, depleted oxygen, and others). This is the theory behind using BFR to increase muscle hypertrophy (size). This was my first leg exercise with the bands prior to this I had them on my biceps (ouch!!!) This is a very intense workout and I would never encourage anyone to try this without someone experienced assisting them. That being said, it was an amazing pump. The fatigue was intense and typically you only use 30-50% of your 1 RM (rep maximum), in other words far lighter weight than you might typically use. I love trying new things in my routine and this technique I may actually incorporate 1-2 times per week. It really challenged me and I wanted to complain and cry during a few times but it was worth it. Don’t be afraid to push yourself past the point of comfort! Bringing back occlusion training for arms.
Marek is training arms 3 days a week on his new program. He will have two heavy bicep training days with one day just pure pump work. On all three of his arm days he will finish his workouts with occlusion training.
Today he finished with spider curls.
4-5 sets:
Set 1 15 reps
Set 2 10 reps
Set 3 8 reps
Set 4 8 reps
Set 5 6 reps
15 sec break between sets

Day 4 brings a huge 3 1/2 hour arm, shoulders and core workout, starting with 15 or 16 separate weighed exercises on my biceps, triceps, forearms and shoulders, before moving to my core where I completed 50 ab rolls, 150 medicine ball sit-ups, 50 weighted decline sit-ups, 150 ab crunches, 25 archer style press ups and about a minute with the skipping rope before finishing off with some occlusion training for my arms, over 150 reps on my biceps and over 150 reps on my triceps too.
