Feeling epic on the Routeburn Track! We recently did a guided hike of the Routeburn which we have thrown up on YouTube (search backpackerguide.nz) which was totally new for us but, hell, we learned a lot! For once, we were not blindly walking through the forest. Maybe something to consider for one of your forest hikes in New Zealand?
“As the moon sets behind the towering peaks of Milford Sound, it’s easy to see why the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area is known as the land that time forgot. During the day you can take a boat cruise along the 15 kilometre sound, get close to towering waterfalls, wave to playful seals and marvel at the rainforest that clings to the cliffs.” Photo & Text by @camillarutherfordphotography
The start of the golden hour on the mouth of the Heaphy river. A stunning way to end the day after walking 29kms with our heavy packs. Cos someone (me) made a mistake with booking camp sites, thinking the third site was only a few kms away from the second and didn’t bother to check the distance indicator at the bottom of the map. We endured, developed blisters and a slight condition called ‘the Heaphy wobble.’ We also had the final 15km the next day. Fun times.
Considerably darker, maybe a few grams lighter, and definitely glad not carrying a pack that grew heavier as we progressed on the 4-day walk of the Heaphy Track. Btw, back at work too. Now, planning the next trek. 😁 Where will you hike next?
Oh the weather outside is frightful and the wind is so spiteful And since we've no place to go Let it blow, let it blow, let it blow
Backpacking the #Keplertrack was an incredible experience. The New Zealand Fiordlands are just stunningly beautiful and feature so many different habitats. @dariasax and I got to see a variety of local bird species, including a number of Kea. #andythealpaca felt right at home. This is our second #nzgreatwalk that we've completed and we look forward to doing many more! Thanks @docgovtnz for all of the great work you do! #Optoutside#NZlife#takeahike
Life's a beech forest getting better as I age looking good in green
Spent the last 4 days and 3 nights trekking one of New Zealand’s Great Walks - The Heaphy Track. It is my first multi day trek and suffice to say, I have even more appreciation of the outdoors. So 80kms later and after some blisters have been popped - will be posting some of the photos taken along the way to get some of the outdoors on your screen. 😎 This photo’s about 22kms from the Brown Hut start. The bridge stood out among the lush green forest, clear river underneath and the rocky track. It’s near one of the smaller huts along the trek, Gouland’s Hut.
