#tbt to the summer when I produced my 1st cover story, #NYCePrix for @amnewyork. A local story, in a local paper.
Hearing about 2 strong, local publications getting killed off (DNAinfo and Gothamist) really hurts. Hearing why pisses me off more.
Yes, this is a business and it was, apparently, a business decision.
However, local journalism is just as important as national and without local publications such as the two recently deceased pubs, journalists like me might never have a chance to show what we got.
To overlook local journalism and those writing local stories is ignorance at it's finest, especially at a time when quality journalism is at a premium, at both the national and local levels.
I feel and stand with those who lost their jobs today because the staffs at both DNAinfo and Gothamist have done solid work, the same work a lot of others don't want to do and some couldn't even do.
I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had with amNY and even the Tri-City Voice back from 09-11. I hope many others like me get their shot after today. Those affected didn't deserve this.
Stay strong y'all!!! #LocalJournalismMatters #MoneyAintEverything
