Last year's WI bird was no cake walk for me. Due to some unexpected work commitments I wouldn't be able to get into the turkey woods until the very last day of my week three tag.. I booked a red-eye, and got in around 2:30am, enough time to get just over an hour or so of sleep.
By the end of week three, the WI public land toms had already started buttoning up. The gobbles that morning were few and far between. By mid afternoon, the woods had grown silent. I decided to stay in the woods all day to hunt the evening and try a parcel of timber I had not been in yet, but had heard a few distant gobbles from that morning.
The move paid off. At 6:39pm, I was able to coax this weary mature Tom in to my setup and seal his fate.
All in all, I had logged over 14 miles hiking that day. I worked hard for this bird with little room for error, and am proud and also thankful of it for giving its life to help nourish mine.
The circle of life is a beautiful thing! I cannot wait to get back in the woods this year! Is it May yet?
