Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed when trying to select a food product that has like 10 variations!?? Well your not alone. Unfortunately that’s the power of marketing!

I’ve put together this info graphic looking at the comparison of organic labeling on food items. But first it’s important to understand what the term “organic” means.
Organic - foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines and address factors such as soil quality, animal raising practices, pest/weed control, and use of additives. Foods with multiple ingredients have additional considerations. Regulations prohibit use of artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors; with some minor exceptions (for example - enzymes in yogurt or baking soda in baked goods).

In May of 2016, the FDA published the final rules on the new nutrition facts label. The current label is more than 20 years old!!! Therefore, the changes in the label were made based on new scientific evidence, new research, and include more recent dietary recommendations, as well as input from the public.
I️t emphasizes serving size, calories, % daily values, added sugars, and a few key nutrients that individuals tend to not get enough of in their daily diets.

Who else has ever seen, or tried these before? 🙋🏻I recently came across these snack pouches, called 'Gutzy, ' a couple weeks ago and I'm addicted 😍They are low in sugar, and extremely high in fiber. The only ingredients are apple, steel oats, and cinnamon (along with added vitamins + minerals). I highly recommend these for a quick on-the go snack. They are a much better option to granola/ protein bars. They contain no added sugars or alcohols, are gluten, nut, + dairy free, and vegan. When purchasing snack foods, always make sure you are checking the nutrition labels and ingredients! Granola bars, yogurts, cereals, and fruit gummies contain some of the highest amounts of sugar. Remember that 4 grams of sugar = one teaspoon. Visualize that the next time you are out shopping. If a food has 24 g of sugar, that means it's equivalent to 6 teaspoons/packets of sugar 😱These snack pouches are a great alternative! Happy Sunday ❄️

Now consumers can differentiate between grams of #sugar that are naturally occurring (like lactose in milk) with those that are added (like sugar in chocolate milk.) Food companies like to market certain things as “healthy” by putting pictures of veggies on the labels. You must educate yourself and read the nutrition label. For example, on V8 splash drinks you will see fruit and veggies on the front label, but the nutrition facts show 70 calories in 8oz, with 16grams of sugar. A better option would be the Xtend BCAA’s you can mix in 8oz of water and still get the yummy flavor for 0 cals & 0grams of sugar!! Winning!!!

If you’ve been checking nutrition labels lately, you’ve probably noticed some changes slowly taking place. One BIG change that is happening full force in 2018, and I’m applauding the FDA for FINALLY making food companies be more accountable, is the information about ADDED SUGAR. Hallelujah!!! What are added sugars? “Added sugars are sugars that an individual or food manufacturer has included in a food or recipe. These are different from the sugars that are intrinsically present in dairy, fruit, and some other foods. “But most of the added sugars in our diet don’t come from stirring sugar into coffee or sprinkling it on berries,” says Maxine Siegel, R.D., head of the food-testing department at Consumer Reports. “We’re getting it from packaged foods—even some you wouldn’t think of as sweet.” - Consumer Reports.
They’re also showing the % Daily Value of sugar which has never happened before....it was always left blank. 😡 BE AWARE that while the FDA recommends keeping your sugar intake to no more than 50 grams per day, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 25 grams for women, 36 for men, and less than 25 grams for children (2-18). That’s a BIG difference in numbers! Do your research. Read those labels.

A colourful salad full of leftovers to end a busy week! Spinach, coconut brown rice with sweet corn and black beans, chicken sausages, tomatoes and coriander 🥗 A new blog post just went live on how to read nutrition labels on food products. Deciphering which foods are healthy can be unnecessarily complicated so I am sharing my top tips to make it quick and easy! Link is in my bio, TGIF everyone 🙆🏼

🕵🏻‍♀ COMPARACIÓN DE HELADOS

1. Algo que diga "light", "liviano" o similares, significa que tiene menos de "algo", pudiendo ser menos azúcar, grasa, calorías, e incluso sodio (por ejemplo la sal light que tiene menos sodio). 2. Por tanto, los dos primeros helados de la línea "In Line" son más bajos en calorías que un helado regular. Sin embargo, hay una gran diferencia entre ambos (fresa y vainilla). 3. El "problema" de los helados son dos: la cantidad de azúcar y de grasa (principalmente saturada), pero sobretodo la cantidad de grasa que tiene. Existen heladerías muy conocidas que tienen helados light porque son endulzados con Splenda, pero no son tan diferentes al no "solucionar" la cantidad de grasa que tienen.
4. El helado de fresa, es endulzado con Splenda y además bajo en grasa (al ser a base de yogurt). Por esto es el más bajo en calorías. El de vainilla, aunque es endulzado también con Splenda, sí aporta más grasa (1 cdta aprox, en solo 1/2 taza equivalente a 1 bolita). Ambos aportan fibra, que es un plus en ambos casos.
5. Así que en realidad el In Line de vainilla se parece más al de Guayabita (alto en grasa y azúcar), que al de fresa. Ojo, tampoco es que estoy recomendando que entonces se coman el de Guayabita 🙄

CONCLUSIÓN: No todo lo que sea "light" es bajo en calorías, bajo en grasa o azúcar. Así que a aprender a revisar las etiquetas y comparar productos, porque no todo lo que brilla es oro ✨
