"Why can't we go backwards?"
- The character James Halliday (played by Mark Rylance) from the film "Ready Player One"
Based on the best selling novel by Ernest Cline, "Ready Player One" is set the near future (The year 2045 - I'll be 70 that year, so don't rush that shit☺) where it explores an exciting vitural reality universe called the OASIS as a way for people to cope as the real world around them edge towards the brink of chaos. The creator of the OASIS, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) passes away, yet he leaves his huge fortune to the very first person who finds a digital Easter egg that he left hidden in the OASIS, which sparks a worldwide contest. The story mostly follows a teenager from Columbus, Ohio named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan, who looks like a young Steven Spielberg) as he participates in this contest, which is full of excitement, discovery and danger as reality is altered at every turn
This visual treat of a movie is exciting and so much fun, filled with many visual and musical references to pop culture - Especially 1980's pop culture which warms my heart (A sequence involving the film, "The Shining" is very inspired). The movie does lose a bit of momentum in its third act, but nevertheless, at age 71, Steven Spielberg hasn't lost his zeal for adventure. Most importantly, he hasn't lost the child within☺ #readyplayerone #movie #film #2018 #basedonnovel #fantasy #sciencefiction #adventure #virtualreality #videogames #popculture #nostalgia #tysheridan #markrylance #benmendelson #simonpegg #oliviacooke #lenawaithe #stevenspielberg #ernestcline
