So last night my nephew and I went to the Royal Farms Arena and saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in a 40th anniversary concert. It was one of the best shows that I have seen over the years. A unique table that I just completed about two days ago. It is made from 260 year old chestnut and has a Brazilian cherry banding. The chestnut was from a barn that had been dismantled 20 years ago. The barn was just a stones throw from where I grew up. The more that I work with the reclaimed chestnut the more that I appreciate all it's unique characteristics.#barns#reclaimed lumber#beams#chestnut#woodshop#woodworking#carpentry#furniture#timber framing#timber#The Timberdude#Northern Maryland Timberworks, Inc.#Forest Hill, Maryland#northernmarylandtimberworks.com

So Monday was a bit of an unusual day. One of those days that most would just assume not happen. As you can see gravity got the better of this tree in my mother's front yard. A storm blew thru and the rest is history. Fortunately the luck of the Irish was with us and nothing was hit by the tree. Tomorrow will have a plethora of activity. A mirror made out of 230 year old reclaimed red oak from my 1850's barn. Made this for the bathroom that I remodeled. It was fumed with Rubio and sealed with 2-c oil pure. So I am remodeling a bathroom for the guy that gave me the 1850's barn. In my eyes you need to make the circle and do right by those that do right by you. A custom floor that I installed approximately 13 years ago. The octagon was plumbed down from the tray effect ceiling that was also an octagon. The unique boarder material went well with the 2 1/4 red oak select. About 13 years ago I built this monster deck. The gazebo design was off of Photo out of a book. I created my own numbers and changed a few features from the original look. So in a few posts I have mentioned taking Timber Frame school with Bensonwood homes. Tedd and his crew left such an amazing impression on me that I changed the way I view the creative world. During my class one of my instructors was a fellow named Jim. An amazing talent in his own right. Jim and I not only connected thru the construction world but also the fire service as well. In the photo the skinny dude now known as the Timberdude is helping Jim put a frame up. It was an awesome time that I will never forget.#timber framing#Douglas Fir#flying timbers#creative#woodworking#carpentry#awesomeness#doing it right#The Timberdude#Northern Maryland Timberworks, Inc.#Forest Hill, Maryland#northernmarylandtimberworks.com

A locally milled random width white oak floor that I installed approximately 12 years ago. As you can see we did borders, inlays and a diagonal layout was done. We carefully scribed around the fireplace stone for a nice clean look. So back about 14 years ago while I was working my career (firefighter) I had an all girl crew. These were ladies that worked in the job but also wanted to learn the construction world. So I started teaching them flooring and over time I was able to have them doing additions, decks, pretty much all of it. They gave themselves a name and called themselves Mac's Angels. I was called Mac due to my last name. They worked with me for about 4 years. In the photo are Deb and Denise. There were two others that started a little later.#carpentry#woodworking#additions#fire department#nail guns#framing#hard work#mind over matter#The Timberdude#Northern Maryland Timberworks, Inc.#Forest Hill, Maryland#northernmarylandtimberworks.com

Approximately 20 years ago I took timber frame school and just after I completed Tedd Benson's class. An amazing week long class that changed my life. A barn near my house was being dismantled from the early 1800's. I was fortunate enough to be given some material that was not going to be taken. I built a crib out of reclaimed red oak. It was built for a friend that was having their first child. They live in California and I in Maryland. This was the beginning of my working with reclaimed materials and great fascination for the timber frame world. As of three days ago I started my 30th year in business. In my eyes I am scratching the surface and hope to spend the rest of my life creating unique well done work. The crib lumber is approximately 260 years old and it swings on a pendulum. A cool project in it's own right.#reclaimed lumber#timber framing#barns#cribs#woodworking#carpentry#hard work pays off#vision#barns#barn lumber#creative#what life is all about#furniture#The Timberdude#Northern Maryland Timberworks, Inc.#Forest Hill, Maryland#northernmarylandtimberworks.com
