Artist Sverre Gullesen was invited to produce a group of sculptures for a grass field in the school area at the Norwegian Fire Academy in Fjelldal in Nordland. The students often stay and rest on the grass during spring and summer, and will be able to look at the sculptures between the challenging exercises that are part of their school day.
The sculptures are in natural concrete, a technique of mixing natural stone into the concrete and afterwards sandblasting away the outermost layer of sand particles, so that the stone masses are visible. This technique was developed by Erling Viksjø and Sverre Jystad in the 50's. The sculptures were created based on elements from the schools' surroundings; the forms of nature in the lines between mountains and sea.
