Yoga is for everyone, of all ages and body types. If you are new to yoga or if you need a recap on the basics regarding breath, relaxation, moving with awareness, maintaining general health, flexibility and strength, then this course is for you.

The course will gives you a foundation and understanding of the techniques, effects and theory of yoga, helping to develop your own daily Yoga practice and also to prepare for other classes held at Noosa Flow.

Connect with your inner strength in this god/goddess pose/ Deviasana, sometimes called fierce-angle posture/ Utkata Konasana. It tones & builds strength in the lower abdomen, hips, groin, legs & small muscles around the ankles & knees. Don't do it with a chronic or recent injury to your legs, hips or shoulders. 🌹
Just press into the ground from each knee and through the ball & heel of your feet. Keep your elbows in line and your spine as vertical as possible - with the coccyx pointing down. Take 3-5 long breaths in AND out. The exhalations soften the body & mind into this posture, inviting balance to the upper & lower body, internally and externally.

Do you want more bliss in your forward bends? Beginners tend to feel tightness in the lower back, groins & hamstrings, especially if they are overweight in forward bends. Their frustration then creates aversion to forward bends. So.... warm up & try this sequence from dancer pose/ Natarajasana to a forward bend dedicated to the sage Marichi - the Vedic Adam & father of humanity - called Marichyasana 1. Follow with a floor twist of your choice and relaxation/ svanasana for a few minutes.
This gorgeous sequence calms your mind, stretches your shoulders, upper back & spine and flushes out the digestive sytem & abdominal organs like the liver & kidneys. It is especially good for people suffering from flatulence, constipation & obesity.
Stay in each pose for 30secs to a minute on both sides.

Dancer pose/ Natarajasana is a challenging posture but there are graceful modifications for all levels of ability. Remember to warm up and have fun trying variations safely - preferably with a yoga teacher - as you become more aware of your strength, flexibility and balance.
We used the rail to support us today, so when you overbalance, you can hang on and come back into this lovely posture. Here are some more tips:

1. The stability in dancer posture/ Natjarasana comes from the foot of the standing leg pushing through the mat, with your kneecap & thigh lifting up. The bent leg lifts from the knee and kicks up. The more you kick up, the more stable the posture feels.

2. Square the hips to the front and keep your bent knee in line with your body, rather than opening out to the left side.

3. Protect the standing knee by lifting up the kneecap & thigh. It’s easy to hyperextend the standing knee in this posture by pulling the kneecap in rather than upwards. Hyperextension occurs when the knee bends past its usual range of motion when straight. To prevent this and to protect your standing leg, engage the thigh and microbend the knee on the standing leg.

Even the experienced yoga practitioners enjoyed coming into this half-moon posture/ ardha chandrasana from triangle posture/ trikonasana.
This morning's sequence is a natural & balanced evolution for the body and mind towards feeling free. Your liberation can last for up to 4 days afterwards, so the way to continue feeling successful & free is by practising yoga regularly.

I am a 500-hour trained yoga teacher with international certification and over 5000 hours of yoga classes recorded since 2005. But this the 1st outdoor yoga class I taught on Sunday 13th February 2017 at Noosa Marina. It continued every Sunday 8-9am and is now on Tuesday, Thursday & Sundays at 8-9am. Yoga equipment is supplied or BYO on the deck past the Italian restaurant at Noosa Marina.
Each class begins & ends in a resting posture with gratitude for practising yoga at this location, with thanks for those who nurtured Noosa and yoga before us, so that we may enjoy being here. It is a gift.

This is a bit of a parody but it shows how you need action in the feet and legs - as much as in the upper body - to get in and out of headstand from dolphin posture, with a half-headstand.
You can see I get to half-headstand with feet dorsi-flexed to maintain action in the legs and abdomen. Then I pause for a few breaths & feel the crown of the head is comfortable on the mat. I check the back of the head & neck is long & supported by downward action from both shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists & the edges of both hands. It's a good feeling - like acupressure - because the crown of the head is a pressure point that can even release headache tension.

As I raise the legs to vertical, I start to point the toes and my legs suddenly become heavy. But upper body stability and strength save me from falling. It requires total committment in that moment and I seem to transcend time itself. It is neither a short nor long interval.
Lesson 1: Keep legs & feet fully activated by dorsi-flexing your feet. Pull toes towards you & push the heels away.
Lesson 2: Establish a firm and steady foundation with your arms & hands.
Lesson 3: The practice of yoga is all about developing the mind’s ability to see things as they truly are, including abstract things, such as ‘time’. Song by Iggy Azalea "Fancy"
