The deleterious effects of sleep deprivation are well documented. Sleep deprivation has been shown to reduce the capacity to encode new memories, can lower mood, can increase blood pressure, can increase body weight and can cause anxiety. For mom's, sleep deprivation is almost unavoidable. I have been sleep deprived for about a year now, as my little guy is not aware of these studies! Thankfully, in the past few nights he has decided that it is safe to sleep through the night. Fortunately, a recent study was published in the journal Sleep showing that our bodies are able to catch up on sleep. They found that weekend sleep extensions may have biologically protective effects in preventing sleep related disorders and obesity. Even if you have been sleep deprived for some time, you can catch up! Now, time for sleep!!!!!
For new mom's in the NOLA area who are struggling with sleep training, I highly recommend Sleepless In NOLA and lot's of patience. :) For those of you who just can't sleep, I love diffusing lavender and cedarwood in the room and even putting a few drops on your pillow and rubbing them on the feet. Avoid all electronics at least an hour before sleep; try reading instead.
