...........We can't always build the F U T U R E for our Y O U T H.......
But we can build our Y O U T H for the F U T U R E.
As a society we often underestimate the capability of our youth to advocate for themselves. However our students at Steel City Academy are encouraged to use their voices and feel empowered. They are doing just that!
On Tuesday our youth came together in protest at the city council meeting against Maya Energy, a company that plans to build a landfill less than 100 feet from our school. Our students have come together to fight injustice and to fight for their education, their safety, their future, their community, and to secure a safe space for those that will come after them. Not only did they stand up and speak in front of city council members, city leaders, community members, and reporters, they also stood in silent protest with signs that demanded their voices be heard, their issues addressed, their needs met, and asking for the support of those that are in a position and cable of actually making these changes. They have also written letters to the Mayor, City Council Men and Women, interviewed community members, signed petitions, and researched zoning laws and their legal rights. As staff members, we are not speaking FOR them. We are speaking out in support of them and we are giving them the tools and confidence to speak on their own behalf. Not only have they done all of these things in a matter of two weeks, but they also stood outside protesting for 45 minutes prior to the meeting in the the freezing cold, snow, hail, and sleet. I encourage you to uplift and empower the youth around you because REAL change comes when the people we want to make changes for can advocate for themselves.
