Everywhere I travel, the one thing I make sure I do is talk with the locals.
These guys kept coming back to the backpackers in Mabul Island with many others to sell sea urchins, abalone, squid, and mantis shrimp.
My Malay proficiency level is quite low but this picture is from a moment when the guys were telling my bf and I how they hadn't managed to sell anything for the day.
The situation in Mabul is extremely complicated, with a mix of locals, stateless locals, locals from other parts of Malaysia, and foreigners all doing business in one way or another.
I am fortunately based here and can return whenever I like to contribute my time tovolunteer. But I find it sometimes difficult to face these situations in places I travel and stay for only a few weeks at a time.
Many of us come from a place of privilege and travel really makes me see that.
That is one reason I try my best to get to know the locals where ever I go and tell my friends and family about them.
What is one thing you definitely do when you travel? *Disclaimer* I asked the guys for permission to take their photo before I took this.
