“We get out of life what we put into it” — and ergo, the way we treat others is the way we ourselves get treated. Kindness folks! We’ve got to be kind.

I get asked all the time how do you book speaking engagements?? (SB: post questions below..no DMs please and screenshot and send my one page speaker page to your community 🤗) You just START! Develop your niche and master it! Reach out to schools, community organizations, churches, non-profits, etc. to speak too. Take pictures and post about your content too. This helps to build your online presence in a saturated market.
You can search EventBrite too for speaking opportunities by emailing the event organizers to see if they need a speaker, moderator, panelist, etc.

Another tip, if you sell a product (book, coaching services, therapy services, tees, etc.), you can set up shop at the event to sell your products. (Not all opportunities need to be paid ones, so if it's free or their budget is low..you can make profit off your products). Network..network...network!!! Let people know what you do and you'd be surprise where it leads you! I went from attending events to being the speaker at events 🙌🏾 If you're a therapist, you have some much valuable gems to offer too. It's time for you to get PAID to SPEAK too.
Next up for me, speaking at a national conference at Rutgers University next week ☺️ #Speaker #blackmentalhealth #SelfCareGuru #TeenTherapist

Many believe that parenting is about controlling their kid’s behavior and training them to act like adults. But perhaps we’d benefit from controlling our own behavior and acting like adults ourselves, instead.

:: Your heart pounds in your chest. Your blood pressure mounts. And you're sweating, too, because your body interprets the argument you're having with your partner as dangerous.

When your body goes into overdrive, it activates the "fight or flight response," making it virtually impossible to have a productive, problem-solving discussion.

So next time you're having an argument with your partner, pay attention to how your body responds. If you can feel yourself getting flooded, take a break to prevent saying something you'll regret (criticism or contempt) or shutting down (stonewalling). For at least 20 minutes, take some alone time to do something that soothes you, whether that means reading a book or taking a walk. Then, once your body has calmed down, you will be in a much better state of mind to reapproach the conflict. :: Credit: @gottmaninstitute

For the past few seasons I have adjusted my mindset regarding my career and fear. The fear of failure can be paralyzing. Being completely transparent my fear of failure to venture into entrepreneur has kept me from my dream of starting my own private practice for years. Despite my professional accomplishments and encouragement from well respected clinicians, I questioned if I can be successful at my own business. After reflection on what defines a successful professional life for me, I decided on my birthday in 2016 to start building the foundation for my dreams. More to come on my new business in 2018. In the meantime please check out my launch page in my bio for information on my business that is coming soon.

[Phubbing: the practice of snubbing others in favor of our mobile phones] Research shows our greatest need after food and shelter is for positive social connections with other people. We’re profoundly social animals for whom connection and a sense of belonging are crucial for health and happiness. (In fact, lack thereof is worse for you than smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity.) So, we err sometimes. We look for connection on social media at the cost of face-to-face opportunities for true intimacy.
It’s painfully ironic that cell phones, originally designed as a communication tool, may actually create addictive relationships and therefore hinder rather than foster interpersonal connectedness.
What does your experience about social media use, intimacy, & connectedness tell you?

Oftentimes we see self-improvement merely as goal achievement. But that achievement is only 50% of it!
The other 50% is gratitude and appreciating what you already have, not focusing solely on future accomplishments. There are so many highly successful people who are never satisfied with what they’ve accomplished and it's unfortunate.

They've conquered every mountain, slayed every dragon and they're still not happy. Don't be one of those people! If you want to have any sense of well-being, you have to show appreciation for what you already have.

One of the best ways to bring awareness to what you’re doing is through journaling. A daily practice of gratitude fills us up with appreciation and shows us our happiness.

Keep it simple. #sundayfamday

What we value, they value.
What we practice, they practice... Whatever we do, let’s lead with kindness. 💓

Motherhood is an honor and privilege, yet it’s also synonymous with servanthood. Every day women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families. Whether they are awake at night nursing a baby, spending their time and money on less-than-grateful teenagers, or preparing meals, moms continuously put others before themselves. ~Charles Stanley

Moms are divine creatures.
Tag a grateful daughter or a Mom who gets it! 💓 .

The more yourself you are, the less competition you have. #happykid

The best years of our life are the ones in which we decide our problems are our own. We stop blaming our mother, technology, or the president. We realize that we control our own destiny; that even injustice has it's good points. We become empowered to be as happy as we can be in an unfair world.

l love this quote because as parents, we *always* have more to do... and on tough days, that can be overwhelming! but other times it’s totally empowering. “Keep going!” we tell ourselves, despite exhaustion, despite anything and everything... it’s this constant effort on behalf of another’s wellbeing... it’s how we thrive. 💓

l know, l know— “um, DUH!” Right?! 😂😁😉
But sometimes we get in our own way— we tell ourselves unhelpful stories, choose limiting beliefs, or act in ways that go against our “best intentions.”
So how do we stack the deck in our own favor? What strategies can we use to help get out of our own way?
Could you share what’s worked for you? Comment below, friends! 💓

It’s okay, friends! No parent actually knows what they’re doing! 😂
l kid, l kid 😉 But really- it’s a job with no one-size-fits-all user manual.
Sometimes we rock and sometimes our efforts are a hot mess! But no matter— we keep showing up, which is perhaps the most important part.... Oh! And we remember to LAUGH! Often. 😁 #joyfulparenting #laughitoff #keepitlight

Own your sensitivity, your awareness, your emotional experience...it’s real, and it’s valuable, and it’s what you’re working with, after all.

Mindfulness work translates— it teaches that pain (or anything which feels like suffering) is temporary and that there are spaces of ease in between this pain... “Just breathe...”
Now fast-forward to parenting: your baby’s crying or your toddler’s throwing another tantrum— mindfulness will afford you that same present-moment awareness, helping you reconnect with the spaces of ease.

What has your experience with mindfulness practice been like? What else would you like to learn about mindfulness and parenting?

Comment below! 🤱🏻🤰🏽🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️💆🏼‍♀️💁🏿‍♀️

So how does meditation work? It involves different neuropsychological processes. Integrating all of these processes helps achieve mindful meditation #njtherapy #njtherapist #mindfulness #meditation #psychotherapy #edgewaterpsych #edgewaternj

Getting kids to remember to apply the coping skills we discuss and practice in session, at home, can be difficult. Recently I found a blank cube template that has worked well in session for creating a reminder tool for clients to use at home. Art, review of coping skills, and a take home tool all in one shot - therapeutic score!

The next step doesn't wait for you to be ready- oftentimes it presents itself, taps your shoulder and says enter if you dare! I hope you dare to take that leap, take that step forward. Ready is a mindset that you take, daringly, bravely. Believing in yourself and your abilities.
Be brave. Be confident. Be daring!

What a nice idea - this art therapist places in her office walls artworks painted by the children she works with.

Day 9 of the Mental Mindful Challenge is Awareness. I love this metaphor from the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy approach: "riding the wave of emotions." We have all had the experience of being knocked out by a strong wave at the beach. As we know, it's useless to stand firm and fight the force of the ocean - it takes all of our energy and simply doesn't work, sending us into a whirling, sandy mess! Why not just let go and allow the wave send us to shore? So often we try to push away feelings, which only ends up making things much worse. Awareness of emotions does not have to equal pain. Allow yourself to experience feelings, no matter how scary they may feel. They will not kill you! 🌊

Day 3 of the Mental Mindful Challenge is nature. Connecting with nature is yoga. What's your favorite place in nature? Soak it up using all 5 of your senses so you can get there no matter where you are. 🌊🌞🐙 •

I have been so busy these past few months with wonderful things - friends' weddings, building a new co-occurring program for teens, and strengthening my private practice - that I have started to lose track of my own self-care and mental health needs. I am in need of a reset! To help me get back on my schedule, I'm going to be participating in the Mental Mindful Challenge, posting something mindful each day. I deserve to acknowledge and honor what is important to ME. Participate with me! Tag BendNotBreak Yoga Project to your posts! 🕉🙏🏼

Day1 post is about appreciation. No matter the day I've had, I love coming home to my sweet, goofy animals. They remind me to be silly, to love unconditionally, and to enjoy the present moment. I am forever grateful for my little, furry yogis. 🐱🐱🐶
