“It’s not often that we get a chance to be a part of history. Today is a historic day.” On this day, October 18, 1997, #NJPAC held its inaugural performance, bringing to life the vision of Governor Tom Kean, Ray Chambers, Larry Goldman and Sharpe James to create a beautiful space where citizens could fall in love with the arts. Today, exactly 20 years later, the Arts Center has become the institution they dreamed about: One of the foremost performing arts centers in the country, and the most diverse.
Former Governor Jim Florio spoke the words above as he watched the implosion of Newark’s Military Park Hotel in May 1993. We know what rose from the blast of those clouds: The birth of the history of NJPAC. Here's a look back at #NJPAC's beginnings and a look forward to what’s next!
