One Surprise Standout for Uber: Food Delivery #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. For years, Bob Gordon, the owner of Footprints Cafe in Brooklyn, handled the delivery of his restaurant’s meals, like his Caribbean-inspired “Rasta Pasta,” to customers. So when he decided to work for the first time with an outside delivery service — UberEats, the delivery arm of the ride-hailing giant Uber — he was nervous.

Then, the orders started pouring in. “We weren’t prepared for the volume that came in” through UberEats this year, Mr. Gordon, 46, said. “I myself, as an owner, had to work three weeks straight cooking on the food line just to keep up.” By winning over restaurant owners like Mr. Gordon, Uber has barreled into the crowded, cutthroat space of food delivery. As its new chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the company with an eye toward an initial public offering in the next 18 to 36 months, top executives believe UberEats could generate enormous growth. Even as Mr. Khosrowshahi grapples with issues such as Uber’s loss of its operating license in London, he has said UberEats has been a “wonderful surprise,” according to a person who has spoken with him.

UberEats stands out even from the rest of the company’s fast-growing — and unprofitable — business. The delivery service, available in more than 120 markets globally, sometimes eclipses Uber’s main ride-hailing business in markets like Tokyo; Taipei, Taiwan; and Seoul, South Korea, the company said. The number of trips taken by UberEats drivers grew by more than 24 times between March 2016 and March 2017. As of July, UberEats was profitable in 27 of the 108 cities where it operated. Uber declined to reveal the service’s revenue. Mark Wahlberg’s family burger chain Wahlburgers facing financial troubles #FACTS SEPT. 23, 2017. Mark Wahlberg’s family burger chain Wahlburgers closed its Coney Island location this month, but sources exclusively tell Page Six that location’s not the only one in trouble.

The company has said the Brooklyn location will reopen, but there have also been problems launching a Times Square location. “They have not been paying their bills,” says a source of both shops. “They were on the verge of being locked out of Coney Island” for not paying rent.

We hear Wahlburgers is behind on rent on its 8,300-square-foot location at 725 Eighth Ave., owned by Thor Equities.

The burger spot took the space in 2015, but has yet to open. “They’re having trouble opening in Times Square. There’s some financial issue,” a source says.

Another source says staffers at the Coney Island location were stiffed and “they have not been paying their bills.” FOODNINFO.COM #FOODNINFO #NINFONETWORK #WAHLBURGERS #MARKWAHLBERG #FOODANDWINE #EATER #EATERDENVER #FOODIE #CHEFSOFINSTAGRAM #HUFFPOSTTASTE #HUFFPOSTGRAM #BUZZFEED #HUFFPOST #BUZZFEEDFOOD #EEEEEATS #FOOOOOD #303EATS #NYC #LAEATS #SAFOODIE #GOUTER #LEFOODING #BONAPPETIT #ENEWS #USWEEKLY #OKMAGAZINE #BURGER

People Think Mark Zuckerberg Posted This Detailed Ad for a Nanny #FACTS SEPT. 21, 2017. A San Francisco-based family is searching for a Mandarin-speaking nanny (salary: $130,000 a year with health benefits!) and people are wondering if it’s Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. “A young, entrepreneurial family with several businesses and philanthropic interests is looking to hire a nanny to provide a safe, caring, nursing and stimulating environment in which a child can develop. This busy family is constantly on the go and has multiple residences," the ad reads. "The existing household and family support staff work extraordinary well together — they rely on and help each other resulting in a strong team. The current team includes a Managing Director, Household Operations Manager, Executive and Personal Assistants, Chefs, Nannies, an Executive Housekeeper, Housekeepers, Facilities/Maintenance Staff, and Security.” The ad states that the person must have three years experience, basic medical training and be fluent in Mandarin. While the caretaker will expected to work from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. for five consecutive days, they will get the next five off.

Per Mommyish, the ad is trending on Chinese social media, with users speculating that Zuckerberg and Chan are behind the posting. Zuckerberg is fluent Mandarin. Chan, a licensed pediatrician and teacher, speaks English, Spanish and Cantonese.

Zuckerberg and Chan are parents of daughters Max, 21 months, and August, who was fittingly born in August. The New York Post reported in 2016 that they have 16 bodyguards protecting their home and its inhabitants at all times. Top French chef asks to return his three Michelin stars #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. One of France’s most celebrated chefs, whose restaurant has been honoured with three stars in the Michelin guide for almost 20 years, has pleaded to be stripped of the prestigious ranking because of the huge pressure of being judged on every dish he serves.

Sebastien Bras who runs the acclaimed Le Suquet restaurant in Laguiole – where diners look over sweeping views of the Aubrac plateau in the Aveyron while tasting local produce – has announced he wants to be dropped from the rankings of France’s gastronomic bible.

Michelin said it was the first time a French chef had asked to be dropped from its restaurant guide in this way, without a major change of positioning or business model.

Bras said he wanted to be allowed to cook excellent food away from the frenzy of star ratings and the anxiety over Michelin’s anonymous food judges, who could arrive at his restaurant at any moment.

Le Suquet had been consistently described by the Michelin guide’s restaurant judges as so good it was “spellbinding”. Bras announced his decision in a Facebook video with the local landscape rolling out behind him, saying: “Today, at 46 years old, I want to give a new meaning to my life . . . and redefine what is essential.” He said his job had given him a lot of satisfaction but there was also huge pressure that was inevitably linked to the three Michelin stars first given to the restaurant in 1999. He asked to be allowed to continue his work with a free spirit and in serenity away from the world of rankings, without tension. He said he wanted to be dropped from the guide from next year. #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. Did you know that carrots are far more nutritious when they are cooked and eaten rather than being eaten raw? This is exactly opposite of every known vegetable in world. The reason for this is the cell walls of carrots are very tough and it is very difficult to digest the cell walls. When cooked, these cell walls break and release the nutrients, making cooked carrot far more nutritious. TODAY IS NATIONAL ONION RING DAY, TRY THIS EASY AND DELICIOUS RECIPE AT HOME. #FACTS JUNE 22, 2017. INGREDIENTS

2 large yellow onions (about 2 pounds total), 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided, 1 1/2 cups cornstarch, 2 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder, 2 1/2 teaspoons onion powder, 2 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper, 2 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons kosher salt, plus more for sprinkling, 1 1/2 cups Anchor Steam beer, 2 cups sparkling mineral water, 1 large egg, 4 to 6 cups vegetable oil (or more depending on vessel), for frying.

Special Equipment:

deep fry/candy thermometer, 2 heat-safe cooling racks, 2 rimmed baking sheets

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 250°F. Set two cooling racks over two rimmed baking sheets.

Cut onions crosswise into 1/2-inch thick slices and separate into rings. Reserve small inner rings for another use. Add 1 cup flour to a large bowl. Toss rings in flour and let sit 30 minutes.

When ready to fry, whisk together remaining 2 cups flour, cornstarch, garlic and onion powder, cayenne, sugar and salt in a large bowl. In another large bowl, whisk together the beer, water, and egg. Gradually whisk the dry mixture to the wet mixture.

Heat an inch of oil in a large pot over medium-high heat until it registers 350°F on a deep fry/candy thermometer. Working in batches to prevent crowding, dredge the onion rings in the batter and immediately drop into the oil. Cook onion rings, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes total. Transfer cooked rings to the cooling racks set over the baking sheets. Sprinkle with salt and keep warm in oven while frying remaining batches. Meet The Aspark Owl, The Fastest Accelerating Car On Earth #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. If there’s something that even the slightest bit of life experience teaches, it’s that talk is cheap. Your date can spend all the time in the world telling you how great of a person they are, Nobel Peace Prize winning humans that they should be, but none of it will strike a chord as being true if they treat the waiter like a lesser life form. So yes, an obscure #Japanese #automaker by the name of #Aspark can tout a game-changing supercar all it wants, but if it wants to make a mark on the world, it needs to show up with guns blazing.

Fortunately, that's exactly what the automaker decided to do by presenting the Aspark Owl at the 2017 Frankfurt #MotorShow This carbon-bodied #supercar has it all, exotic materials, a PR team insisting it’ll be the #fastest thing on Earth to accelerate from 0-60 mph, and an all-electric drivetrain that can actually pull that feat off. Hard accelerating supercars like the Tesla Model S P100D and Rimac Concept 1 have shown the world that when it comes to acceleration, batteries do it better. In-depth specs on the Owl have yet to be released, but with a lightweight body shaped to cut through the wind and electric motors offering full torque from the get-go, the Owl may just hit its targets.

Aspark outlined the car's main goal to accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds, which would make it the quickest road car on the market. Previous images of the Owl depicted a bare carbon body, but Aspark decided to dress the supercar up for Frankfurt by coating it in a pretty shade of silver. Its low-slung cockpit helps balance out the tall wheel arches on the front end while a rear wing visually elevates the tapered-off rear end. The design sees success in the sense that it manages to look special without ripping off designs from other supercars. Unfortunately, it remains ambiguous, but we’re hoping that its performance on track and while cruising on the road will be impressive enough to give the badge some weight. #VEHICLENINFO #NINFONETWORK #ASPARKOWL #JAPAN #TOKYO #FRANKFURT #GERMANY #CARSHOW #FRANKFURTCARSHOW #ELECTRICCAR #TESLA #ELONMUSK #CARPORN #CARLOVERS

Aston Martin CEO: Green vehicle regulations are meaningless and 'just spin' #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. Lawmakers are formulating "meaningless" #greenvehicle regulations, according to Andy Palmer, CEO of #British #luxurycar manufacturer Aston Martin.

He said authorities were committing a fundamental misstep by stipulating what technologies should be adopted, referring to #Britain's July announcement that it would ban the sale of new #petrol and #diesel #cars by 2040. The regulation was aimed at reducing air pollution.
"Policy makers should not try to be engineers," Palmer quipped, adding that the announcement was "just spin" without any practical meaning. "In my view as an engineer, it's better to prescribe the emission, and then let the engineers figure out what the right technology is," he said.
According to Palmer, the danger in the #car ban lies in authorities' lack of knowledge about which #engineering solutions best suit their objectives. By refining existing technology, gasoline cars can almost double their #fuel economy — a feat that is already a reality with #Formula1 speeders, which put 50 percent of the energy produced into moving the car, the #CEO said.
That improvement, if applied to internal-combustion-engine passenger vehicles, would mean an almost 50 percent cut in carbon emissions for a given mileage.

In contrast, "if you take today's engine and you simply slap a hybrid on, you end up more or less in the same place," he said. #VEHICLENINFO #NINFONETWORK #ASTONMARTIN #ANDYPALMER #BUZZFEED HUFFPOST HUFFPOSGRAM #CARLOVERS #BBC #LONDON #ENGLAND #INSTACARS #GTSPEED #BENTLEY #FIAT #TESLA #ELONMUSK #LOSANGELES #CARPORN

'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' dethrones 'It' with $39M debut #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. The R-rated spy comedy "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" displaced the horror sensation "It" as the No. 1 film in North America, while the second "Lego Movie" spinoff of the year didn't assemble the expected audience.

The #20thCenturyFox release opened with a weekend-leading $39 million debut, according to #studio estimates Sunday. But "It" still continues to pull in record crowds. With $30 million over the weekend, "It" is now the highest-grossing horror film of all time, not accounting for inflation, with $266.3 million thus far.

Want Free Parking? Drive an Electric Car in Dubai #FACTS SEPT. 24, 2017. Dubai, with its 14-lane highways and car-dependent residents, will provide free parking and toll-free driving to encourage motorists to shift to #electriccars as a way of cutting #carbonemission in the oil-rich #UnitedArabEmirates

The #Dubai Electricity and Water Authority aims to have 32,000 electric #cars on local roads by 2020 and 42,000 by 2030, Chief Executive Officer #SaeedAlTayer said Sunday at a news conference in Dubai. #DEWA installed 100 #chargingstation across the city by 2015 and aims to add another 100 by the end of next year, he said. “As an incentive, DEWA’s registered users will be able to have their electric vehicles charged by DEWA’s Green Charger electric vehicle charging stations, completely free until the end of 2019,” Al Tayer said. Together with the Road and #Transportation Authority, the utility is also offering free parking spaces and exemptions from tolls and vehicle registration fees for electric-car owners.
#MiddleEastern crude-producing countries are shifting toward renewable sources of energy to help reduce domestic #oil use and preserve more #petroleum for exports. Dubai, the second-biggest #sheikhdom in the United Arab Emirates -- which holds about 6 percent of the world’s crude reserves -- has started building a 1.2 billion #dirham ($327 million) solar plant, while neighboring #SaudiArabia is planning for its first utility-scale wind project.
